  • A North Carolina jury has awarded almost $25 million to a father and son against a hospital the plaintiffs claimed should have reported signs of child abuse prior to a serious subsequent injury. Six-year-old Ajamu "Man Man" Gaines Jr. arrived at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C. with a two broken bones in his arm in April 2003. An x-ray revealed an additional rib fracture, and his mother offered a questionable explanation for his injuries, but hospital employees failed to take action, said Cale Conley, a partner at Conley Griggs in Atlanta who represented the plaintiffs.

  • FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - A 15-year-old student was shot in the neck with what appeared to be a small-caliber bullet during a lunch period outside a North Carolina high school Monday and police have not been able to find the gun or any suspects. Catilyn Abercrombie was in fair condition after surgery at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, according to sheriff's office spokeswoman Debbie Tanna. Abercrombie was able to respond to questions by nodding and shaking her head, Tanna said. Cape Fear High School and a nearby middle school were locked down for hours before students were allowed to go home.

  • A North Carolina jury has awarded $26.8 million to a former University of Charleston basketball star and his son after a hospital's staff failed to recognize the boy had been abused. The lawsuit, filed against Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, alleged that staff failed to take action in 2003, when Ajamu Gaines Jr., 6, was taken to the hospital with injuries that showed he was abused.

  • FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The 15-year-old girl injured in a shooting at her North Carolina high school was downgraded from stable to critical condition on Tuesday, police said. Catilyn Abercrombie is being treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, according to Cumberland County police spokeswoman Debbie Tanna. Detectives learned of the change in her condition when they visited the facility Tuesday.

  • Mrs. Annie Margaret Johnson Beane, of Fayetteville, N.C., and formerly of Siler City, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was born on February 17, 1928, the daughter of the late Harvey Frank and Lela Mae Johnson. She graduated as a Valedictorian of the Class of 1945 of Siler City High School. She also graduated from the UNC-Greensboro Business School. She worked at several banks in Siler City and Graham, N.C. On December 22, 1946, she married Chaplain Kenneth Eugene Beane, of Siler City.

  • Cecil Lawrence McCabe, 55, of 1500 Middle River Loop, Fayetteville, N.C., died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Mr. McCabe was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a former employee with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

  • Mrs. Annie Margaret Johnson Beane, of Fayetteville, N.C., and formerly of Siler City, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.   • John D. Marshall, Jr. died April 29 at Cape Fear Valley medical Center, Fayetteville, N.C. He was born April 26, 1930 in Bowling Green, Va. the only child of the late Eddye Pearson Marshall and John D. Marshall, Sr. Coach Marshall was preceded in death by his son, John D. Marshall III. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Pearl Jackson Marshall; daughters Cynthia Booker (Richard) and Karen Holt of Petersburg, Va.; stepsons Jeffrey Jackson (Donna) and Jerrell Jackson; thirteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one aunt; several cousins; devoted friend and ex-wife, Clementine M. Marshall and a host of dear friends and former football players.

  • Mrs. GeJuan P. Howard Artis entered into rest Wednesday, August 1, 2007 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Artis was a native of Augusta and a graduate of Richmond Academy, Class of 1989.
