Inflation has been slightly higher than projected. Measured by the consumer price index (CPI), inflation is now higher than 3%. A strong rise in prices for electricity and petrol has pushed up CPI inflation since autumn 2007. Inflation has increased in many countries. Oil and gas prices have risen further through spring. Capacity utilization in Norway is high. An ample supply of labor, strong productivity growth and considerable terms of trade gains through several years have boosted the growth potential of the Norwegian economy. Growth in the Norwegian economy seems to have slowed as expected in 2008 Q1. Enterprises in Norges Bank's regional network report high capacity utilization but moderating growth in most of the industries. Monetary policy in Norway is oriented towards annual con...
The Department of Commerce, as part of its continuing effort to reduce paperwork and respondent burden, invites the general public and other Federal agencies to take this opportunity to comment on proposed and/or continuing information collections, as required by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, Public Law 104-13 (44 U.S.C. 3506(c)(2)(A)).
Capacity underutilization is the norm in practically every business environment. That is why the role of capacity management has become more important in both short-term and long-term periods. In the short term, knowing the existing level of capacity utilization allows management to realign their product mix to take advantage of their existing underutilized capacity. In the long term, recognition of the amount of structural idle capacity allows management to make a strategic investment, prevent an unneeded acquisition of additional resource capacity, or provide a justification for getting rid of idle capacity. The cost/management accounting literature, led by Robin Cooper and Robert Kaplan, has revived the capacity management issue first raised in the 1920s, when it was believed that th...
The most acute phase of the global economic crisis appears to have passed. Output growth has resumed in most parts of the world. It appears, however, that the upturn in advanced economies will only be moderate and that the economies of many countries will be marked by considerable spare output capacity and high unemployment ahead. The crisis has given rise to new imbalances that will dampen the recovery. Weak prospects have contributed to a marked decline in interest rate expectations in many countries. New information suggests that the recovery in the Norwegian economy is continuing, but that capacity utilization is probably somewhat lower than anticipated in autumn 2009. Monetary policy cannot fine-tune developments in the economy, but it can mitigate the most severe effects when the ...
The current global economic downturn is the deepest in the post-war period. The turnaround was abrupt and pronounced, and is having a negative impact on markets for most goods and services. The turnaround in Norway had already occurred just over a year ago, but in the period to autumn last year, it appeared that capacity utilization in the Norwegian economy would gradually decrease to a normal level. Norges Bank reduced the key policy rate by 0.5 percentage point on both October 15 and October 29, by 1.75 percentage points on December 17 and by a further 0.5 percentage point to 2.5% on February 4. Norges Bank has also stepped up its supply of liquidity to banks in the form of short-term and long-term loans. The operational target of monetary policy in Norway is low and stable inflation ...

Sen. Charles E. Schumer said he hopes his call for an investigation into oil refineries' connection to high gas prices will cause prices at the pump to fall. The main purpose is to get them to do something" about prices, Schumer said of his call for a probe. "But even the spotlight has had an effect. It's had some effect on Western New York, it's had some effect in other areas. Schumer, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and some other Senate Democrats sent a letter two weeks ago to the FTC's chairman, urging an investigation, citing the U.S. refiners' high profits when they were producing at just 81 percent of their capacity. (Their capacity utilization had risen to 86 percent as of May 20, compared with 87.8 percent a year ago, according to federal government data.)
Output from the nation's factories fell for the second straight month in May as plants operated at the lowest percentage of capacity since September 2005, the Federal Reserve reported Tuesday. S. industrial production slipped 0.2%, the government said, reflecting across-the-board weakness in the economy. In April, production slipped 0.7%, underscoring the strain on the economy from the deep housing slump and reduced consumer spending.
