  • Put the kiddies to bed for Saturday night's marathon of malevolence, a sanguinary six-pack that alternates between neoclassic B-flicks and trashier fare. Indeed, movies rarely scrape the barrel's bottom quite like the evening's opening salvo, Black Devil Doll (5:30 p.m., presented with digital projection), auteurist brothers Jonathan and Shawn Lewis' deliberately scatological blaxploitation parody of the Child's Play franchise. When Mubia Abul-Jama, a convicted Black Power murderer- rapist, gets sent to the electric chair, his spirit gets channeled to a wooden doll owned by the bosomy Heather (wooden actress Heather Murphy), who somehow becomes enchanted by the jive-talking puppet, maybe because he sounds like a hoarse Redd Foxx. Heather's posse of gal pals stops by, which unfortunately...

  • Few of Peter Robinson's mysteries are predictable, which is one of their charms. This one hews to a tough yet somewhat hackneyed theme of the sufferings of Detective Alan Banks and his daughter when she is kidnapped by a sadistic psychopath. Since Tracy Banks is the child of a detective and is well aware of what her father does for a living, it stretches credibility that she would invite a debonair but dubious male acquaintance to stay at the remote cottage owned by her somewhat estranged father who is also out of town. She discovers too late what she has gotten herself into and finds herself the victim of a young drug thug who rapes her repeatedly as a matter of course and is prepared to kill anyone who gets in his way.

  • Even today [Ed Leeper] struggles to explain why he spent so much time scratching out ink on paper. He mumbles that before the project he had visited the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., with "all the names" (58,195 to be exact) and wondered what the names of the victims of the Holocaust would look like gathered in one place. He says he. wanted to do something for his newborn grandchild, who is half Jewish. (Leeper isn't Jewish.) Then, more than an hour later, unprompted, he returns to the question, as if unsatisfied with his earlier answers. "I did it because it's the best way to show people what 6 million is," he says. "I was taking something and turning it into something else. His devoutly inclusive instincts came before online forums invited everyone to share their particular t...

  • THE ASTRONAUT FARMER. In its first scene, Michael Polish's oddball charmer telegraphs that it isn't going to be a typical underdog-and-his-dreams story: A man in a vintage spacesuit rounds up cows. Rancher Charlie Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton) plans on going to space - he's building a rocket in his barn - and nobody from his dusty Texas town or the federal government is going to tell him otherwise. This quirky dramedy, co-written by Michael and Mark Polish (Twin Falls, Idaho), is occasionally derailed by some saccharine moments. But Farmer also illustrates how our culture clamors for dream-big stories while consistently undermining them. Despite its whiff of the fantastic, it's Farmer's spirit, buoyed by the American iconoclasm and ingenuity we claim to treasure, that is the story's real ...
