ALBANY, N.Y. - New York's highest ranking Republican lawmaker on Tuesday agreed with Democratic candidate for governor Eliot Spitzer on upstate New York's dire economic straits - a condition Spitzer described as being similar to Appalachia.
But Republican Gov. George Pataki, in his first comments on the week-old issue, called Spitzer's comparison an "insult" to upstaters.

Texas Gov. and Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry can resist the comparison all he wants, but he's more like George W. Bush than George W. Bush.
The comparisons were unavoidable. They've both been Texas governors. They're both fluent in Bubba and both unapologetically have been brought to their knees by Jesus Christ. The latter two categories hardly constitute a lonely hearts club. If you are born again in the GOP, you have friends.

VP candidate pales in comparison
In my lifetime, I've seen three vice presidents sworn in as President of the United States because of the death or resignation of the president whom they succeeded (Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, and Gerald Ford). In every case, whether or not one agreed with the new man philosophically, they were seasoned politicians with vast experience in the running of government and international affairs. I'm appalled at John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as the person to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
