  • AUSTIN, Texas - It's a hall of fame for the infamous - a collection of artifacts from con men, large and small, who swindled, stole and cheated to get everything from bread money to billions. The Fraud Museum, an exhibit in an Austin office building, contains a Bernard Madoff engraved cigar box, given to clients as tokens of his appreciation; now-worthless stock certificates from Enron, WorldCom and Adelphia; and a canceled 1975 check from inside- trader Ivan Boesky.

  • Jim Robertson, managing editor Call 815-1776 to contribute. I got a letter from the IRS the other day saying I owed a couple thousand dollars in penalties and back taxes. But when I dug out my canceled check for payment to the IRS, I found out I did indeed pay it. And I sent it to them, and I got a credit for both the penalty and the taxes owed. So I'm advising anyone who gets a letter from the IRS saying that you owe money, be very careful, go through your records. Chances are good that you've already paid your taxes.

  • I'll admit I was skeptical when the padded envelope containing a List Caddy crossed my desk here at Home. But, being a devoted coupon- clipping queen who inspires dread among supermarket cashiers, I vowed to try the organizer and shopping cart helper on my next trip to Kroger. As an avid player of The Grocery Game (www.thegrocerygame.com), which helps shoppers match their coupons to supermarket sales for the biggest-possible savings (more on this in a later HomeStyle), I've developed my own well-honed coupon-organizing system with a large and durable canceled-check holder with 16 pockets. List Caddy wasn't what I'd expected from the PR people's description, but it was worth a whirl if it promised to make life easier at home and while food shopping.

  • Seniors' fear of going broke paying for long-term care is an opportunity for crooks selling bogus contracts for home health care. Among the victims is Florida resident Eva Muller. Several years ago, says her friend, Ingrid Eglsaer, Muller "started having trouble with her memory." So Eglsaer helped Muller go through the unopened mail she had hoarded. Eglsaer found a canceled check for $3,500 and asked Muller what it was for. She didn't remember. Digging through Muller's paperwork, Eglsaer discovered that the money had gone to a home-health-care plan that was supposed to provide Muller with discounts on services. But when Eglsaer contacted the company after Muller broke her arm, "the company was evasive and kept avoiding me," she says.

  • When Shereen Greene recently scanned her bank statement, she found a $139 charge from a company she had never heard of - Pharmacycards.com. The Atlanta paralegal dug out her canceled check and easily saw it was fake. The name on it was her maiden name, which she had not used in seven years. The address was five years old and her signature was missing. In its place, was a brief message: "Authorized by your customer. No signature required.

  • The sign showed up on a bulletin board outside a local seniors' center in Southern Maine last week: "Flu shot clinic canceled. Check with your doctor for vaccine. That notice was also passed around a number of businesses that in the past have provided free or reduced-cost vaccinations for their employees. Public health officials say supplies are tight, but that more vaccine should arrive by the middle of next month.

  • Folks who itemize deductions on their tax returns will no longer be able to claim the anonymous bills they toss into the church collection plate or the charity kettle. A new law that went into effect Jan. 1 requires documentation -- a canceled check, bank statement or receipt -- for all monetary charitable contributions that donors intend to claim as a tax deduction. The IRS had previously required documentation only for gifts of $250 or more to a single organization.
