NEW YORK - NBA Commissioner David Stern canceled the first two weeks of the season Monday, warning players and fans that the cuts may have only just begun. With every day that goes by, I think we need to look at further reductions in what's left of the season," said Stern, who doubts that a full 82-game season can be played.
Here are the other cuts and savings announced by Schweitzer in recent weeks: * $600,000 by not spending an optional appropriation in waste-cleanup funds appropriated by the Legislature to Swank Enterprises of Kalispell to pay for cleaning up environmental liabilities. * $380,000 by eliminating five jobs, four of which were currently filled, as regional development officers in the Commerce Department. * $119,000 in savings at the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation by using video conferences to cut down on travel by employees. * $20,000 in savings by not printing the state phone directory next year. * An estimated $350,000 in projected annual savings through Schweitzer's order directing state agencies to reduce their out-of-state travel by 35 percent.
