• Power Plant Ideal for Crocodiles: ; Fla. Biologists Monitor Reptiles That Have Thrived in Facility's Cooling Canals

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - An unexpected but fruitful relationship has blossomed between two potent forces in the swamps of South Florida: the American crocodile, and a nuclear power plant. The reptile has made it off the endangered species list thanks in part to 168 miles of manmade cooling canals surrounding Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant in the southeastern corner of the Florida peninsula. It turns out that Florida Power and Light was building prime croc habitat just as virtually every other developer was paving it over.

Declaring Canalside to be at a "tipping point," waterfront officials approved a contract Monday to construct historically aligned canals, keeping the project on schedule for completion late this year. Looking beyond that, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. members approved a cultural master plan packed with ideas and recommendations for bringing year-round, family-friendly attractions to the waterfront.

IN THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER DELTA - Service canals dug to tap oil and natural gas dart everywhere through the black mangrove shrubs, bird rushes and golden marsh. From the air, they look like a Pac- Man maze superimposed on an estuarine landscape 10 times the size of Grand Canyon National Park. There are 10,000 miles of these oil canals. They fed America's thirst for energy, but helped bring its biggest delta to the brink of collapse. They also connect an overlooked set of dots in the Hurricane Katrina aftermath: The role that some say the oil industry played in the $135 billion disaster, the nation's costliest.

• Finn Seeks Hearing On Plan to Fill in Old Shelton Canals

Alderman Jack Finn, D-1, said he is old enough to remember when Shelton had thriving mills along the Housatonic River, and he said those factories used the canal water to generate power for manufacturing. Finn wants to see that part of the city's past preserved. He sent a letter recently to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Massachusetts in opposition to the filling in of the canals. The letter requests that the Army Corps of Engineers hold a public hearing on the matter.
