Most Americans have heard a version of the folk song, "The Wabash Cannonball." Some probably remember that there actually WAS a Wabash Cannonball, a Wabash train that primarily ran between Detroit, Mich., and St. Louis. But how many people know that the song actually came into existence before the train? According to the ballad lyric project at California State University-Fresno, the song "The Wabash Cannonball" had its origins as a folk ballad in the late 1800s. The title first appeared in sheet music in 1904.
