Thomas N. (Tom) Meacham, 80, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011 at his home in Blacksburg, Va. Tom was born in San Luis Obispo, Calif. to Vernon Henry and Berwyn Kennedy Meacham. He attended San Luis Obispo High School then California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), where he was a member of the Alpha Zeta honorary fraternity and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in June 1953. One week later Tom and Carol Beck, also of San Luis Obispo, were married. Tom then served two years in the United States Army, stationed in Washington and Texas. The installation at Cal Poly is in a cauliflower seed project run by students of the university. The equipment allows students to view soil moisture data and learn how to make informed irrigation decisions based on the data they receive from the PureSense Irrigation Manager(TM) software.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Capt. David Michael Balk, 53, passed away Dec. 2, 2010 in Virginia Beach. Capt. Balk recently retired from the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) in Little Creek after serving 30 years in the United States Naval Civil Engineering Corp. (Seabees). He had qualified as a Seabee combat warfare and diving officer. He received a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, Calif., and a M.E. in Ocean Engineering from Texas A&M. His enthusiasm and passion for engineering, ocean sciences, and anything to do with the ocean was surpassed only by his love of family.
