Employment of part-time faculty members by community colleges has become an increasingly common approach to reducing institutional costs, which may have unintended consequences for student outcomes. This study examines me relationship between part-time faculty members and the associate's degree completion of community college students. The authors use hierarchical generalized linear modeling to analyze student- and institution-level data from the California community college system to determine how student exposure to part-time faculty members affected the likelihood of earning an associate's degree. Findings indicate that students experienced a significant yet modest negative effect from exposure to part-time faculty members on the probability of completing an associate's degree.

With [Arnold Schwarzenegger]'s 2004-2005 state budget proposal set to impose the biggest fee hike ever-even higher than Gray Davis' $25 a unit (Arnold's is $26), community college students are preparing to engage a "total recall" effort to rescind this hike. If you're looking for a reason to mobilize the most nonchalant segment of the voting population (18-21), taking away the only college opportunity that takes every student "where they are" and makes them "higher education (or vocation) ready.
You hear folk, like State Education Secretary, Dick Riordan, say stuff like, "It's only $26 a unit-lower than half the nation's community college systems, making California Community College still one of the affordable deals in the country," as justification for another example of the rich tryi...

The first community colleges were created as a truly American institution in the late 1800s in Chicago. At that time they were called junior colleges and for the most part were an extension of the secondary schools of that time. California was one of the early advocates of this second opportunity for students to prepare for university education with the first colleges opening their doors in 1907.
Following WWII, the junior colleges grew rapidly and were started by local communities as independent community colleges. In 1968, the state Legislature recognized the value of these fledgling colleges as part of the Donahoe Act, thus creating the California Community College System. This system is the largest community college system in the world and serves in excess of 2.4 million students. T...

When it comes to the situation facing Anne Arundel Community College, things could be worse than an average $24-per-semester increase in charges for students. In fact, things are a lot worse right now at many of the more than 1,100 community colleges in the nation.
For instance, we're sure no one affiliated with AACC wants to be in California's community college network right now. That system, The Washington Post reported last week, took $520 million in cuts - 8 percent of its budget - in this academic year. The system's chancellor estimates that the colleges are serving 200,000 "unfunded" students, and thousands more are being turned away from overloaded or unavailable classes.
