CHICAGO - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday that a California-based company can begin the nation's first human clinical trials using embryonic stem cells. Geron Corp. will this year begin such cells in a clinical trial of spinal-cord patients. If Geron's trials are successful, it opens the door to new therapies and drug discoveries that many believe the Bush administration stymied because it had banned the use of federal funds for such research. Geron, however, has used its own money and that of investors.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - A potential new treatment for depression involving magnetic pulses applied to the brain is getting a closer look from neuroscientists at University of California, Berkeley. Known as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS, the magnetic therapy has shown promise in clinical trials, but scientists have little understanding of how it alters brain function.
Ten years after University of Wisconsin-Madison researcher James Thomson first isolated and cultured human embryonic stem cells, a California company has received clearance from regulators to begin the first clinical trials for a therapy based on them. This summer, Geron Corp. plans to begin a study involving a human embryonic stem cell-based therapy with eight to 10 patients who have recently been diagnosed with acute spinal cord injury. The patients will receive a single injection within two weeks of their injury.
What researchers, state officials and foster care agencies in various states told The Associated Press about the use of foster children in AIDS drug experiments. CALIFORNIA: No foster child can legally participate in clinical trials without an order of the state juvenile court. A spot check of several counties said they could not locate any records or officials who could recall ever approving a foster child for an AIDS drug trial.
