  • In my admittedly biased opinion, The Roanoke Times is the leading provider of food coverage in Southwest Virginia. We offer columns on food and wine, restaurant reviews, food and retail blogs, the 7- Day Menu Planner, a local food database, a Foodie Calendar and more. But if you've ever gone hunting for those features on roanoke.com, you may have found them organized in a scattershot way. I'm here to tell you those days are gone.

  • For years, I've been telling people my brain is on my calendar. Inconveniently, that calendar happens to be the one on the wall in my kitchen. I have never been one to carry a planner. The only way to do it successfully would be to write, in big bold letters on each day of my wall calendar, "TAKE PLANNER WITH YOU." The logistics are just too cumbersome. • Before a recent variegation of responsibilities (though not of cubicles), I served as calendar editor at this fine publication, helping usher in the new-look calendar. (The job is now in the more-than-capable hands of Matt Stafford.) During my relatively brief tenure at the Sun, there have been many changes. I've seen longtime owner Steve McNamara sell the paper to Embarcadero Publishing; I've seen Sam Chapman take the reins as publisher; and witnessed the arrival of Jason Walsh following the retirement of esteemed executive editor Linda Xiques. And I've been involved in a number of calendar tweaks-including going from the "8 Day Week" to the "10 Day Planner," eliminating our "Sonoma Spotlight" feature and now this latest alteration. I'll be frank. Like some of you, in many ways I prefe...

  • Spring arrived Monday afternoon. At least, that's what my calendar says. But since my day-planner wasn't made in Maine (where "Mud" is an actual season that runs at least until April 1, and where "Spring" sometimes seems to last from mid-April until early August) I figure it's OK to ignore the official calendar and keep the furnace cranking. You may say it's spring. The moon may say it's spring. But me? I figure spring doesn't start until spring fishing does.

  • As the New Year approaches each year, there is a spirit of newness, a mental image of a new page turned, a fresh slate and renewed energy. Many of us make resolutions, hoping to take advantage of this "fresh start." Below, are some ideas that can help realize your resolutions. They are time-related disciplines to make life and work easier, more productive and less stressful. Time is a valuable resource. Time once spent, can never be recaptured. As you spend your time each day, invest it with careful consideration. Use time tools: A calendar is a basic time tool. The best type is one you can carry with you. Second best is a wall calendar placed where you, coworkers or family members can see it. The most important thing is to keep it current and use it daily. A daily planner is even bette...

  • [Cynthia Townley], owner of http://organizedhome.com and http://organizedchristmas.com and known as the originator of the Christmas Countdown (a recommended to-do list to follow found on her site), recommends printing out a calendar and putting on it everything you need to complete before Christmas. This includes holiday work parties, family activities, baking cupcakes for a school party - all of those dates set in stone. Then add to it all of the incidentals such as writing out holiday cards and letters, buying a new dress for a party, buying gifts, groceries, baking, etc. Write a list of everything you have to do and then transfer it to the calendar. Don't forget decorating, travel time to relatives' and holiday meals. She recommends an old-fashioned paper calendar - not one on a Blac...
