Study hints at higher death rate in women on calcium channel blockers

The beta blocker category had been relegated to the delete file by developments in the treatment of hypertension - by calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor antagonists. Yet by the end of this year, AstraZeneca's Toprol-XL, a beta blocker, is expected to pass Pfizer's Norvasc as the leading antihypertensive brand. What Toprol-XL promotion capitalized on was "the halo effect." It is spelled out in the 2004 promotion plan as a four-point selling message: Toprol-XL is the only once-a-day beta blocker for hypertension, angina and heart failure; its effectiveness has been proven in all three indications; it provides consistent 24-hour beta blockade; and it has demonstrated safety and efficacy. Confirmation that this strategy seems to be working lies in the sales fi...

BURLINGTON, Mass., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues finds that, owing to increasing generic availability of antihypertensive agents, the hypertension drug market will decline from $26 billion in 2009 to $23 billion in 2019 in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom and Japan.
The Pharmacor 2010 findings from the topic entitled Hypertension reveal that the market-leading drug, Novartis's Diovan/Tareg, will suffer the greatest decline as its sales will decrease more than $1 billion in 2013, following the entry of generic versions of the drug. By 2019, the drug classes typically used as first-, second-, and third-line therapy will all be subject to generic co...

WASHINGTON, June 28 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Four of the eight drugs in a class called Calcium Channel Blockers -- used to treat people with high blood pressure, angina and heart rhythm abnormalities -- have been chosen as Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs, with potential annual savings of $1,000 to $1,700 a year over higher-priced medications.
The drugs, known as CCBs, were the eighth most prescribed class of medicines in the United States in 2004. They are effective medicines with over 20 years of widespread safe use. They help lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes. However, millions of Americans may not be taking these medications due to the high cost of some of them.

In a bid to counter the influence of drug-company salespeople, government health officials are sending out their own army of representatives to change the way doctors treat hypertension.
It's been 14 months since a landmark study found that low-cost diuretics are the best option for many hypertension patients. But still nearly 80 percent of blood-pressure prescriptions are written for newer, pricier drugs such as ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers that are far more lucrative for the pharmaceutical companies.

THE QUESTION: An increase of albumin in the urine of people with Type 2 diabetes is considered an early sign of kidney disease. Might blood-pressure drugs - such as ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers - help prevent this condition, known as microalbuminuria?
THIS STUDY involved 1,204 adults with Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure but normal levels of urinary albumin. They were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: an ACE inhibitor (trandolapril), a calcium channel blocker (verapamil), a combination of the two or a placebo. After 3 1/2 years, microalbuminuria had developed in 6 percent of those who had taken the combination or the ACE inhibitor alone, compared with 12 percent of those who had taken channel blockers and 10 percent of the placebo group.

CHICAGO - Older women who combine two popular blood pressure drugs might be raising their risk of death, according to a study of more than 30,000 women. But doctors warned the research has flaws and said it is too soon to know whether the commonly prescribed duo really is dangerous.
In the study, women who combined diuretics with calcium channel blockers - among the most frequently prescribed drugs for high blood pressure - had nearly twice as many fatal heart attacks and other cardiovascular deaths as women on diuretics plus beta blockers or ACE inhibitors.

I've always admired my friends who dutifully get themselves to the gym, plug in to their Walkmans or iPods and do their 45 minutes on the treadmill or Stairmaster. I've never been able to stand the tedium for more than three weeks at a time. There are many reasons to pay for some time with a personal trainer, and accountability is certainly one of them. When you're paying $40-$70 for that hour, you're a lot less likely to blow it off.
It made a tremendous difference to have someone design my workouts with my very specific needs and idiosyncrasies in mind. One of those idiosyncrasies is attitude. I get easily discouraged when I don't see quick progress, and positive thinking has not always been a strong suit. At first it was hard just being in the same room with my trainer, who was relen...
