The CSC Holdings Inc (Cablevision) case arose from Cablevision's announcement that it intended to offer an "RS-DVR" to its customers. It is alleged to work the same way a regular DVR does, except that when the customer requests a recording to be made, the request is sent to Cablevision, a copy is made on the RS-DVR equipment, and it is stored there until the customer requests to play it. The District Court found in favor of the copyright owners on all points. The court ruled that the copying and public performances are done by Cablevision, albeit at the customer's request. But a panel of three judges on the 2nd Circuit overturned the decision. The appellate court held that the copying at issue was done by the customer, not Cablevision; thus, Cablevision was not a direct infringer.

Cablevision announced the launch of the new app today, less than six months after it debuted its Optimum app for iPad in April. The app allows Cablevision customers to enjoy more than 300 channels of live TV and thousands of titles of video on demand on any iOS-based mobile device. The iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad can also be used as a virtual remote control for conventional set-top cable boxes in the home.

Cablevision and Verizon are using an arsenal of perks in a dogfight over small business customers to find a simpler alternative to competing on price.
Competition for voice and data services has led to rate reductions. Verizon dropped contract requirements last year and last week cut voice and data to $49.99 for small business, roughly the same as Cablevision's $59 rate, once taxes and fees are included.
