  • Over the 10 years we've lived in our '80s-built house, we've slowly but surely had to replace a number of its pieces and parts. It's a testament to our disposable society, I suppose, that things such as doorknobs and cabinet handles lose their luster and grow downright ugly with some years' use. Outside features seem especially prone to obsolescence, from wooden handrails and deck floors to doorbell buttons. The weather had corroded the finish on our front-door light fixtures so badly that they looked more like rusty bunk-house lanterns than antique brass ones when we moved in.

  • Summer is here and many have already started canning, freezing and drying foods using fresh Illinois produce. Proper food handling is especially important to preserve food safely at home. University of Illinois Extension and the United States Department of Agriculture's National Center for Home Food Preservation share the following tips to prevent bacterial growth:- Wash hands before touching food or food preparation equipment.- Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet. • Wind, earth, deep water, mountains, shallows, fire, thunder and lightning: The unfathomable Canadian writer, educator and psychotherapist Ross Laird has grabbed hold of these eight Taoist symbols of life energy (drawn from the I Ching) and formed a simple yet poetic book around them. Each essay included in "Grain of Truth: The Ancient Lessons of Craft" explores the meaning of a single trigram and its relation to the mystery inherent in the creative process. By detailing his painstakingly contemplated construction of wooden objects (things of all sizes and kinds, like a box to hold his wife's grandmother's ashes, a hand plane, a marimba, a garden lantern, handles for a cabinet and a dinghy), Laird's work, both in wood and in word, illuminates the often dimly lit territory where art and...

  • Jimmy Pike listened to the sales presentation and looked over the product Thursday, gripping the oak handles, touching the cedar inlay, feeling the upholstery, assessing the dimensions. Cabinet business kinda slow?" asked the good-humored funeral home manager, breaking into a big grin.

  • It's a choice of refurbishing or buying new WHEN I WAS 6 I HELPED MY DAD sand and varnish cabinets for our house. An able craftsperson, he saved a bundle by building his own cabinets - simple, sturdy and functional in design - and he accomplished a feat that most experts discourage. "If you've got no job and a lot of time, then you can do it," said Rusty Knight, owner of Santa Fe-based Rusty Knight Kitchens. After years of seeing people bite off more than they can chew, Knight is openly pessimistic about do-it-yourselfers. He argues that few people have access to the many different woodworking tools necessary to build or refurbish their own cabinets, not to mention time, workspace and know-how. My dad is in that minority of capable do-it-yourselfers. For the rest of us, two choices rema...
