Over the 10 years we've lived in our '80s-built house, we've slowly but surely had to replace a number of its pieces and parts. It's a testament to our disposable society, I suppose, that things such as doorknobs and cabinet handles lose their luster and grow downright ugly with some years' use. Outside features seem especially prone to obsolescence, from wooden handrails and deck floors to doorbell buttons. The weather had corroded the finish on our front-door light fixtures so badly that they looked more like rusty bunk-house lanterns than antique brass ones when we moved in.
