  • The word "debate" has several definitions, but neither lends itself to the media circus that transpired during what was meant to be the second GOP candidate debate last week. The event was clearly an attempt by the media to direct attention to the two or three front-runners. It would have more aptly been named the "Romney-Perry Debate." Isn't this type of contest usually left to the end, when the candidates from each party are discussing their issues? My anger is not just at MSNBC; the Republican debate on Fox News was just as partial, as was C-SPAN's. At one point in the latest debate, a candidate's remarks were actually cut off in mid-discussion in order for the network to replay another candidate's comments.

  • People say teenagers these days don't know anything about national affairs, nor do they care. But that isn't true for the dozen Shawnee Heights High School students who competed in this past weekend's state debate tournament in Olathe. These kids watch C-SPAN. They pay attention to legislation passed by Congress. And sometimes -- when the legislation discussed or passed has to do with the year's debate topic -- well, they can get pretty excited about it.

  • President Obama has come a long way from the heady campaign days of 2008, when he promised to televise negotiations over his health care reform live on C-SPAN. Now, the White House is conceding that parts of the accelerating debate with Congress over the future of programs such as Medicaid and Social Security should probably be done in private. The administration is committed to openness and transparency. We are also committed to getting things done," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters one day after Mr. Obama said revamping entitlement programs requires a "quiet" conversation between Democrats and Republicans.

  • Just over a year ago, candidate Barack Obama promised an open debate on health care. We'll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN," he said.

  • The election is over, but our job is not. President-elect Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain laid out in their respective victory and concession speeches what now lies ahead. We are a nation at war with outside forces. We also are a nation divided on such domestic issues as socialized health care, and tax, Social Security and school reform. And if you've ever tuned into C- Span to watch a floor debate, you know some Democrats only drink blue Kool-Aid and some Republicans stock only cherry and strawberry in their pantries. So it will be interesting to watch Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain at work on their respective ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. Hopes remain high for both.

  • BECKLEY U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall and Republican challenger Elliott Spike Maynard pummeled each other during a bare-knuckle debate Tuesday night over everything from mudslinging TV ads to coal mining. Before a crowd of about 150 at the debate from Mountain State Universitys Carter Hall in Beckley, Rahalls hometown, the Democratic incumbent blasted Maynard over ads being run by his supporters that attack his Lebanese ancestry. And he attacked Maynard for his ties to Don Blankenship, who is the chief executive of troubled coal mine operator Massey Energy Co. Rahall called the ads disingenuous, dishonest and outright despicable. A non-party group, the West Virginia Conservative Foundation, has so far pumped $567,645 into anti-Rahall ads this fall. Maynard fired back, angrily labeling Rahall a...

  • Like it or not, we ran out of options," said David Obey, the Democratic chairman of the House appropriations committee. "There has never been a chance of a snowball in Hades that Congress would cut off those funds to those troops in the field." Even Hillary Clinton, one of just 14 senators who voted no, said she'd thought "long and hard" about her vote because she wanted to "do everything we can to protect the troops. "Thank goodness we are finally here," Republican Congressman John Boehner said in reference to the Democratic agreement to support the war, "choking up" for C-SPAN. "Three and a half months [the time spent on the debate] to respond to our troops and their families is too long," added his colleague Roy Blunt. What are they talking about? The troops don't need or want the ...

  • Behind tinted windows covered with his red and white campaign signs, former Memphis mayor Willie Herenton sat on a leather couch in his office on a recent afternoon, analyzing voting data. A stack of newspapers and national magazines took up the corner of his coffee table. A debate about the concerns of black veterans on C-SPAN briefly caught his attention before he started flipping through a recent issue of The Economist magazine.
