Newly sworn-in Mayor Edward Suslovic called on residents of Maine's largest city Monday to build on the assets of Portland, which he called a world-class, global community.
Suslovic noted international attention generated by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and the Portland School Department, which serves students who speak more than 50 different languages. He also mentioned CIEE, a student exchange agency that recently moved its headquarters from New York City to Portland.

Julye Williams knows all too well the leg up that this summer's internship abroad will give Albany State University junior Danielle McKinley.
I thought Danielle would be a good fit for CIEE because the organization offers an enriching, credible and culturally relevant experience," said Williams, who graduated with a master's degree in business administration from Florida A&M in 2002.

Take a look at most nonprofit boards of directors and you're likely to see more than a few gray hairs. But this week, the Institute for Civic Leadership took a step toward infusing some youthful energy into the makeup of local boards.
Since 1993, the Portland organization has trained more than 500 people in community leadership. Last fall it launched the Young Emerging Leaders program, which equips people between the ages of 22 and 35 with skills in nonprofit governance, pairs them with a mentor and then matches them to a local board seeking younger members.

The majority of them were white, but the college does extensive recruiting from other countries so there were some Europeans, Asians, and Africans. They were all wonderful women. One of my closest friends was Pakistani. All the women I met were strong and independent," she added.
"I enjoyed my year in Spain," she said. "I found the Spanish people very welcoming and interested in getting to know me. I was really thrilled to realize that they knew of Merlene Ottey!"
