The Western New York Running Hall of Fame continues to progress from idea to reality. A relatively small group of individuals have been working on the project since last summer (full disclosure: I'm on the board), and progress has been made. Bylaws have been written, and non-profit status has been granted. If the finish line isn't quite in sight yet, the starting line at least is well back in the mist.
Sonia Troche, Executive Director of Toledo-based Adelante. Inc., was one of the key participants in the conference. She says the attendees "charted a path to success, including the drafting of bylaws, codifying of policies, and incorporating as an independent with a non-profit 501(c) 3 designation. The June 19-20 minority health event featured keynote speaker and former Toledoan Robert Torres (Economic Development Director for the City of Canton), and focused upon the topic of "Health and Economic Development." The session facilitator was Margarita De León of Toledo, who is originally from Lorain. We followed a very positive agenda," says Troche. "One key point we made very clear is that membership is open to all Ohio Latino based organizations dealing with health and with an interest...

I thought we had a partnership," said Julio Avael at the commission meeting Tuesday night, "but I guess we didn't." The city manager was referring to the Southernmost Homeless Assistance League (SHAL), an organization he had hoped would offer help in operating the shelter on the city's behalf. Strictly speaking, he was right about the partnership; the city is a member of SHAL. But at a meeting on June 2, the board of SHAL expressed surprise about his hopes. "The city wants to dump a hot potato," SHAL's chairman of the board, Lou Hernandez, told Solares Hill this week. "It was a regularly scheduled meeting and [John Jones] is suddenly saying he needs some help. But SHAL cannot run the Safe Zone. It is not in our bylaws. We only have one part-time employee. MIDLAND PARK -- Atlantic Stewardship Bank may be the only lender in the country with a tithing policy written into its bylaws by the lender's church-going founding fathers. That policy calls for giving 10 percent of pretax profit to Christian charities and non-profit organizations chosen by its board. But last year the recession took a toll on its shareholders and favored charities as earnings and donations fell.
