John P. Ferguson received a severance package of more than $5 million when he was forced out as president of Hackensack University Medical Center last year, bringing his total compensation for 2009 to $7.7 million, according to recent federal tax filings.
His senior vice president for operations, Doreen Santora, received $2.6 million -- including more than $1.5 million in severance -- when she left in the executive reshuffling that followed, the documents show.

What are the rules for non-profits that were established before 1970 regarding the 990? I get different answers from the IRS. I am a president of a small not-for-profit incorporated in 1935. The people at the IRS say it was not required to get approval to be a not-for-profit. Also, since we haven't used our Employee Identification Number in years (never filed a 990 because we are less than $25,000), the IRS didn't mail us a letter and killed our EIN. Please help. I've asked five CPAs and I get five different answers. The IRS can't give me a single answer, either.
It's not surprising that you've gotten different answers from different people. The situation you are describing falls into a gray area.
