REDLANDS Represented by a new defense attorney, Damien Guerrero appeared in court Wednesday for the first time since jurors announced last week they were unable to convict or acquit him of first-degree murder in the 2003 shooting death of Redlands teen Kelly Bullwinkle. Guerrero's jury split 11-1 in favor of convicting him of first- degree murder by means of lying in wait. A unanimous conviction would have carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

LOS ANGELES - A state appeals court panel today upheld a Monrovia man's conviction for murdering his mother, who was stabbed 86 times. The three-justice panel from the 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected Samuel Hernandez's claim that there was insufficient evidence to support his conviction for first-degree murder and the special circumstance allegation of murder by means of lying in wait.
