State Rep. Sharon Wylie celebrates election night results with Vancouver City Councilman Jack Burkman, left, at her party Tuesday at the Atrium Lounge in Vancouver. Election returns Tuesday had the Democrat leading Craig Riley by more than 3,000 votes. ---
Vancouver City Councilor Pat Campbell has been ousted from the general election by his two primary opponents, second-day election returns released Wednesday afternoon show. Campbell, a first-term incumbent, was still trailing challengers Bill Turlay and Anne McEnerny-Ogle by margins that while narrow are too great to overcome, County Elections Supervisor Tim Likness said Wednesday.
At-large elections unify community The idea of dividing Vancouver into wards and electing city council members in a ward-by-ward election is a bad idea. Certain evils come to mind: ward heeler, patronage, spoils system words synonymous with political corruption.
Democratic Rep. Tim Probst, right, has gained influence quickly since winning the 17th District seat formerly occupied by Republican Jim Dunn. Just weeks after his election in November, rookie state Rep. Tim Probst, D-Vancouver, found himself catapulted into the inner circle of House Democrat leadership as a member of Speaker Frank Chopps informal kitchen cabinet.
Let primaries guide council choice With the deadline approaching to fill the vacant Vancouver City Council seat, it is painful to watch the posturing of candidates and current members of the council. Id like to propose a change in the selection criteria. Council members would be smart to only consider those applicants who made it through the primaries. They showed an interest in serving the people of Vancouver by working hard to earn votes toward last Novembers election. Those people who invested their time to learn the issues facing Vancouver going door to door canvassing for votes. Who else is better qualified to represent us?
La Center public relations consultant Ann Rivers will join the growing group of candidates vying for the 18th Legislative District seat currently held by Rep. Jaime Herrera, R-Camas. Herrera announced last week that she will seek the 3rd Congressional District seat presently held by U.S. Rep. Brian Baird, D-Vancouver, who will not seek re-election in 2010.
Voter turnout appears brisk in Clark County's first August primary election, pushed by the Port of Vancouver's $78 million industrial development tax measure. Through Friday, county elections officials had received 24,790 ballots out of 168,923 mailed this month to registered voters.
Election results released Wednesday showed Vancouver City Council candidate Bill Turlay widening his lead over his opponent. Turlay now leads Anne McEnerny-Ogle by a little more than 1,100 votes, or 51.74 percent to 47.66 percent. On election night, he led by 656 votes. Should his lead persist, he will succeed Pat Campbell, who was ousted by voters in the August primary.
A sharply worded e-mail sent by a Vancouver lawmaker to a well- known conservative, dismissing pleas for election reform as a case of "sour grapes," provoked outrage this week on a conservative Web blog. When you go out and tweak the right wing on the nose, and I've done it a number of times, I'm always expecting a backlash," said Rep. Jim Moeller, a Democrat.
Notes, quotes and anecdotes about last week's election while wondering how many folks thought they voted against the supermajority when they actually voted against abolishing it: Seek advice from the vanquished e_SEmD Vancouver City Council members might want to invite Arch Miller to speak before them sometime soon. Miller, a three-term Vancouver port commissioner, was pole-axed by newcomer Jerry Oliver in Tuesday's election. Conventional wisdom is that voters were infuriated when Miller and the other two port commissioners tried to more than double port taxes without voter input and with virtually no public participation in the process.
