• AP1000 Design Certification Amendment

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or Commission) is amending its regulations to certify an amendment to the AP1000 standard plant design. The amendment replaces the combined license (COL) information items and design acceptance criteria (DAC) with specific design information, addresses the effects of the impact of a large commercial aircraft, incorporates design improvements, and increases standardization of the design. This action is necessary so that applicants or licensees intending to construct and operate an AP1000 design may do so by referencing this regulation (AP1000 design certification rule (DCR)), and need not demonstrate in their applications the safety of the certified design as amended. • Sewer Smoke Tests to Occur in Part of City

The city of Columbia is continuing to "smoke test" sewer lines through October, weather permitting. The testing, conducted by TREKK Design Group LLC, locates sources of inflow and infiltration into the sanitary sewer system. The tests currently are being conducted in the areas of Broadway to the north side of Interstate 70, and east of Stadium to the west side of Highway 63. No other parts of Columbia will be affected.

• Valley Ems Needs Work, Says Study

SHELTON -- A study of the Valley Emergency Medical Service program says the agency needs to make several changes, including a general overhaul to more "evenly distribute response times through geographic relocation." The $15,000 emergency medical service study was delivered to the Valley Council of Governments Wednesday, a month later than expected. Valley officilas, however, halted discussion Wednesday on the report prepared by Jonathan Best of Disaster by Design LLC of Stratford, opting to wait until the VCOG EMS Task Force's companion report is available and the public has a chance to review its suggestions. The Best study says VEMS should establish formal written EMS policies, restructure the Board of Directors and develop a marketing plan to better its image.
