A two-week strike by 45,000 Verizon Communications Inc. workers that ended last week with no winners is a shining example that work stoppages may be futile in this economic environment, experts said. Labor played its main card, and it is very doubtful it achieved what it wanted to," said James Craft, a labor expert and business administration professor at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Business. "You don't play a trump card, and then just go back to work" without winning any concessions from management, Craft said.
Having [Verizon] and Comcast would be great for the consumer," says Pittsburgh City Council President Doug Shields. "But for the city, the question is: What's going to be the revenue? The average Comcast subscriber currently pays $100 per month for cable, [Howard Stern] says. If that rate dropped to, say, $80 once Verizon enters the market, "instead of [the city] getting 5 percent of $100, we'll be getting 5 percent of $80," he says. "I don't think it's going to be a significant loss [for the city], but it could be." For $47.99 a month, Verizon offers a cable package, which includes more than 200 digital channels, and up to 14 high-definition channels. In the strongest indication yet that it intends to become a major employer in Niagara County, Verizon Communications submitted a tax- break application Wednesday that outlined plans to invest $4.5 billion over 10 years in a data center in Somerset. The project is expected to create 200 jobs in five years, paying an average of $85,000 a year, according to the application. About 500 construction workers would be needed to put up the buildings, which would encompass almost1 million square feet of space.

The West Virginia Public Service Commission has approved Frontier Communications Corp.'s plan to acquire Verizon's land line business in West Virginia, but there are strings attached. A Frontier spokesman said the company is pleased. A Communication Workers of America spokesman said the union is disappointed.
FairPoint Communications' top executive received $1.2 million in salary, bonus and stock awards last year, including a 30 percent increase in his base salary after the company's purchase of Verizon's landline network in northern New England. Although Eugene Johnson's overall compensation fell sharply from 2007, the chief executive officer's 2008 base salary was raised to $600,000 by FairPoint's board of directors, according to information filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Six other top managers got raises averaging nearly 23 percent.
Gubernatorial candidates Andrew Cuomo, Carl Paladino and five other contenders are slated to debate tonight, but not on Verizon's network. While Cablevision Systems Corp. viewers face a blackout of News Corp. programming including sports events, the company in a separate content battle denying FiOS viewers access to tonight's debate between the all seven state gubernatorial candidates.
