TODD JURICH'S Bistro in downtown Norfolk has one of the region's best wine lists and long has been a fine eatery favored by wine fanciers. Now there is a new reason for oenophiles to visit - Todd Jurich's Bistro "Bertie's Cuvee" 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville (Napa Valley).
No, Chef Jurich has not taken up winemaking. But he did buy a barrel of good cab from the folks at Trespass Vineyards in the Napa Valley, and it has been bottled with a label decorated with a sketch of a mermaid eating grapes. The artwork is by Jurich's mother, Roberta "Bertie" Whisner.

Samarra, Iraq A few moments before Todd Olson was hit by shrapnel from an exploding bomb, he walked past a wall with a painted message for American soldiers: "Have a bloody Christmas and a miserable New Year.
At his boyhood home, there's another painted message on a wall. When Todd was just a boy, he used an old can of white spray paint to write his name on the side of the dairy barn at his family's farm. His older brother, Tim, told him he'd get in trouble for doing it. So the next day, Todd spray painted Tim's name right next to his.

HACIENDA HEIGHTS - High consciousness is hardly how most people would describe teenagers.
But Todd Hedell, 29, aims to change that, at least in Hacienda Heights.

I very much enjoyed David Wolman's article on the success of wildlife on military land (HCN, 5/24/10). It's always welcome to hear of nature thriving. But the assertion that these instances represent a balance between "trashing of, or respect for, the planet" doesn't follow. If anything, it's David Br o wer 's dream: an intact landscape left untrammeled by people for 60 years. That the places cited have been a boon for wildlife is pure dumb luck, not a "balancing." (Let's not forget that the U.S. military is far and away the most polluting institution on earth. That "national security" is always cited in sustaining this legacy is more than ironic.) We all want balance. The problem is that everything has swung so far toward the industrial that those calling for a return to "balance" will...

LEWISTON -- The narrow path that once led to Gayton Post 31's home diamond at Lewiston High School was riddled with bumps, ruts, rocks and other hazards. Last month, though, a bulldozer made it wider, even and far less treacherous.
Gayton's path to its second consecutive American Legion State Northeast Regional hasn't been nearly as smooth, but coach Todd Cifelli and his players knew it wouldn't be.

A cursory glance at a few numbers about the Nationals' bullpen displays a divide in its effectiveness.
On the one hand, left-hander Sean Burnett and right-handers Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen worked to a 0.93 ERA through the season's first five games - and Clippard and Storen added two scoreless innings each in Thursday's extra-inning game against the Marlins. But Todd Coffey, Chad Gaudin, Brian Broderick and Doug Slaten combined for a 15.63 mark.

Few people may realize it, but Todd Helton is not the only former two-sport star playing professional baseball in Colorado.
Sky Sox third baseman Josh Fields, a two-year starting quarterback for Oklahoma State in the early 2000s, also falls into that category. The 28-year-old Fields, who is second on the team in hitting with a .391 average through Tuesday, threw for more than 5,500 yards and 55 touchdowns while going 17-9 as the Cowboys' starting signal-caller from 2002-03.

DEAR ABBY: My fiance, "Todd," and I have been together for four years. He proposed this summer and our wedding is planned for next year. I thought planning our wedding would be fun, but it has turned out to be a nightmare.
I want orange as our primary color, but now Todd is saying he "hates" the color orange, although he never mentioned it before. I tried to get him to agree to pair it with a color of his choice, but he refused.
