  • EAST RUTHERFORD - Avery Johnson easily described his new backup point guard, Sasha Vujacic, as "positive energy." But the Nets' coach still is struggling to define veteran forward Troy Murphy's status. Both players had a big impact in Sunday's 89-82 win against Atlanta, though Murphy isn't assured of getting a similar chance tonight at Memphis.

  • The dialogue feels improvised, so I'm guessing that [STEVEN SODERBERGH] used the script, by David Levien and Brian Koppelman, as a template, then told his actors to loosen it up. For the professionals in the cast, that's fine. But [Sasha Grey] is a terrible actress, and I know you think I'm saying that because she's a porn star, but really, she's awful - flat, nasal, mumbly. When someone tells Chelsea to read the comments on her competitors' Web site, she says, "I don't really like checking out reviews." Huh? Not the brightest bulb in the film, that's for sure, so in a way, the casting works.

  • PICO RIVERA - A rave scheduled for this weekend has been canceled after a teenager died at a similar event in Los Angeles last week. Electronic music festival "Fresh Squeezed 2010" was set for Saturday at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena, but venue officials balked after Sasha Rodriguez Roth, 15, of Tarzana, collapsed and later died during Electric Daisy Carnival at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that was staged June 25-26.

  • Princess Tiana debuted in "The Princess and the Frog" in New York and Los Angeles last month, and grown-ups have certainly been buzzing. But for many little black girls growing up with Malia and Sasha Obama in the White House, the historic nature of Tiana 's debut in Disney's mostly white princess lineup doesn't quite seem to register. She sees Obama, the first girls, she's like, 'that's nice,'" said [Erica Branch-Ridley], broadband supervising producer for the TV program "The Electric Company. "When I heard that Tiana was going to be an African American princess that made me more proud to be black," she said. "Tiana is my role model. I want to be like her."

  • You may be anticipating the new indie film "The Girlfriend Experience," with porn actress Sasha Grey as a high-priced New York call girl, for, well, obvious reasons. But you probably weren't planning to head to the big screen to watch a bunch of Wall Street types angsting about the economy.

  • The Nets are last in the NBA in home attendance, but lead the league in trade rumors. At the midpoint of their season, that's really all the Nets have going for them - the possibility of acquiring Carmelo Anthony. Some players haven't developed as much or as quickly as expected and the Nets' 10-31 record is worse than many anticipated after the changes they made, including the arrival of coach Avery Johnson. The organization is working hard to get Anthony because the Nets realize the best chance to improve and have a playoff-contending team by the time Barclays Center opens in Brooklyn in 2012 is using their trade assets to get a star player. Here's a look at the Nets, who were 3-38 at this juncture last season, at this season's midpoint: Best win: So few to choose from, but the 96-94 w...

  • - OK, 'the Machine' is broken. But the real question is why is Sasha Vujacic getting any real minutes? Forget the fact that right now, he's a shooter that can't shoot particularly well. But he's a complete liability on the defensive end. Seeing him matched up versus JR Smith is painful. It looks like he's trying real hard on defense when it reality it's the very definition of 'false hustle'. It's wasted energy and someone needs to tell him that hand-checking was outlawed right around the time Greg Anthony was molesting ball-handlers about a decade ago. Trevor Ariza, quite simply, is a necessity for the Lakers, not a luxury item. It's that simple. No, he still doesn't hit from the perimeter consistently, but for a team that really doesn't have a lot of athleticism, Ariza's length and ver...

  • They don't have Rudolph's shiny red nose or fly through the sky pulling sleighs, but Margoat Garter Belt, Sampson and Delilah and Sasha and Cowboy Boots have their own peculiarities. The goat, donkeys and dogs are among the animals at Mary Ellen and Danny Fleetwood's Fayette County farm. Their antics provide fodder for the couple's friends and neighbors during the holidays and the rest of the year.

  • The spring social season started blooming this weekend as A- listers gathered Saturday night in Northwest Washington for two high- profile events - the Gridiron Club Dinner at the Renaissance Hotel and the Leukemia Society of America Ball at the Convention Center. However, some of the luster was taken off the Gridiron Dinner by the nonattendance of President Obama - the first absence by a first- year president since Grover Cleveland. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was scheduled to speak in his boss' stead at the white- tie dinner - one of Washington's few such events. Mr. Obama attended the dinner in 2006 when he was a U.S. senator and performed a song. But this year, daughters Malia and Sasha began their spring break Friday, and so the president took first lady Michelle Obama and t...
