  • GENEVA (AP) -- Iran and six world powers concluded talks today with an agreement to reconvene early next year, suggesting Tehran might be willing to address concerns about its nuclear program. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned that unless U.N. sanctions are lifted the six face failure in the next round. Diplomats from delegations at the table with Iran said Tehran made no commitments to talking about U.N. Security Council demands that Tehran freeze uranium enrichment -- which has both civilian and military uses.

  • TEHRAN, Iran -- Protesters battled police over Iran's disputed election and shouted their opposition from the rooftops Sunday, but President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dismissed the unrest as little more than "passions after a soccer match" and drew his own huge rally of support. Just after sundown, cries of "death to the dictator" echoed through Tehran as thousands of backers for Ahmadinejad's rival, Mir Hossein Mousavi, heeded a call to bellow from the roofs and balconies. The deeply symbolic act recalled the shouts of "Allahu Akbar," or God is Great, to show opposition to the Western-backed monarchy before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

  • While tens of thousands of frenetic, sweating fans chanted and waved flags, Sam was stoic. He pressed up against the metal fence corralling the crowd and held his camera phone in the air for hours. He was at least 50 feet from the podium, but Sam would not miss his chance to photograph visiting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Now Israel is very, very, very scared of our Lebanon," Sam said on a rocky dirt road only miles away from the Israeli border after the rally. "That's why Mr. Ahmadinejad came to Lebanon.

  • No doubt the Israeli war in Lebanon contributes to this fear. According to Seymour Hersh, "The Bush administration was closely involved in the planning of Israel's retaliatory attacks" because "a successful Israeli Air Force bombing campaign" could "serve as a prelude to a potential American attack" against Iranian nuclear facilities. What these events show is that U.S. policy towards disarming Iran may be working. The deal cut with the other members of the Security Council isn't the result of some newfound love for Washington's policies, but the exasperation with president [Mahmoud Ahmadinejad]'s policy of "no compromise" over Iran's pursuit of nuclear technology. As Mahan Abedin put it in "Asia Times Online," it's the "conservative establishment that has emerged" as the biggest opposi...

  • It is true that most of the armed forces, especially the Revolutionary Guards and the Basij, support the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ah' Khameinei, and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but the decision making in Iran is not exclusive to these two men," said human rights activist Ghanim Jawad on the London-based (ANB-TV) Arab News Broadcast. He pointed to a "vertical division" not only within the government but also within the society. "The position taken by the Iranian society toward claims of discrepancies in the elections is much better than the position of Arab societies toward similar claims," wrote [Fahmi Huwaidi]. Iranians at least protested on the streets and clashed with police and security forces for 10 days. Arab populations have now accepted election fraud as a fact of Ufe and g...

  • years for blogger TEHRAN, Iran -- An Iranian court sentenced the founder of one of the first Farsi-language blogs, credited with sparking the boom in Iranian reform bloggers, to more than 19 years in prison for his writings, a news web site reported Tuesday. Iranian-Canadian Hossein Derakhshan, 35, was a controversial figure among Iran's blogging community. Writing his blog from Canada, he was initially a critic of Iran's clerical leadership, but later he praised hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Derakhshan then visited Iran in 2008 and was arrested. TEHRAN, Iran - Iran on Tuesday offered the first official indication that Oman is playing a role in trying to secure the release of two American men imprisoned for more than a year.

  • GENEVA - Iran and six world powers concluded talks with an agreement to reconvene early next year in Istanbul, indicating that Tehran may be willing to address concerns about its nuclear program. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned that unless U.N. sanctions are lifted, the six face failure in the next round.

  • TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's supreme leader bestowed his formal endorsement on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's second term as president on Monday but withheld a powerful symbolic gesture - the kisses and close embrace that portrayed their bond four years ago. The awkward and halting moment came when Ahmadinejad leaned forward, apparently to kiss the hand of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But the supreme leader raised his left hand and gently diverted Ahmadinejad to kiss his robe. The uneasy body language reflected much of the political tension and collateral damage since the disputed June 12 election sent Iran into its worst internal unrest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

  • TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - More than 70,000 Iranian students have volunteered to carry out suicide bombings against Israel, Iran's state news agency reported Monday, but President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has not responded to their request for permission. Volunteer suicide groups have made similar requests in the past and the government never responded, giving the campaigns more of the feel of propaganda.
