CLEVELAND -- Only Chris Duffy knows for sure why he didn't report to Triple-A Indianapolis this week, an action that caused the Pirates to place him on the restricted list.
His agent, Mike Nicotera, ruled out one of the theories Friday.

School leaders from across the state Tuesday portrayed an educational system under attack by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's budget cuts, with threatened layoffs of teachers and cuts to programs.
But Lt. Gov. Robert J. Duffy told lawmakers during a budget hearing that school districts have plenty of options -- from raiding rainy day funds to getting wage concessions from employees - - to keep the governor's proposed 7.3 percent cut in aid to education from hitting classrooms.

When the Marathon County, Wisc., Labor Council announced two weeks ago that no Republicans would be invited to their Labor Day parade in the town of Wausau, it seemed like a throwback to a bygone era. Labor Council President Randy Radtke said, "We didn't start this fight in Wisconsin, but we're responding to anti-worker positions and policies supported by local Republican politicians." Mr. Radtke is not exactly Samuel Gompers - the late, longtime president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) - but he definitely exudes that old-time spirit.
Faced with a public backlash - and possible financial repercussions - the labor council abandoned the barricades and lifted the ban on Republicans in their parade. Mr. Radtke spat that GOP lawmakers "should be ashamed to even show their faces," ...

J. Duffy, the colorful and outspoken leader of United Teachers Los Angeles, turns over the reins of power to teacher Warren Fletcher on Friday, with some reluctance but also some relief.

When Matt Duffy played hockey at the Cumberland County Civic Center, it was a big deal.
There were so many people. We felt like the best out there," said the 19-year-old Duffy.

The Times' piece began with a particularly disturbing case: Holding out his wrists, an 8th Grade student explained to his teacher and classmates that he had been hospitalized after attempting suicide. The teacher allegedly said, "Look, you can't even kill yourself." A classmate offered advice on how to cut a main artery. The teacher is quoted as saying, "See, even he knows how to commit suicide better than you.
Unions are bound to defend their members, but A.J. Duffy, president of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) maintains that should not deter the district from doing "its job, which is to help failing teachers to get better, or if they can't, to work to get rid of them." Dufify's comments go to the issue of top-down accountability ... for school boards, unions, administrators, teach...

On the plane, Duffy designed a pattern consisting of small flower-like islands that, when pressed to another strip of similar islands, would stick, but could be peeled away just as easily. "It's an interlocking device similar to Velcro," he explains. "But when you pull it, it's much stronger and more durable than Velcro." Duffy dubbed the stuff "Qwik Grip.
Though Duffy has broken even on that invention, it hasn't made up for the losses he's taken on Qwik Grip. He's lucky his wife is a tenured professor at St. Michael's College, he says. How much have his inventions cost him? Like a problem gambler, he's still in denial about that. "I'm deep in a hole there," he confesses. "I don't want to publish how much I've spent on it."
[John Landell] woefully reports that he spent $13,000 to paten...

She's sort of the new Winehouse in an uncracked bottle.
Like Cher and Madonna, Amy Ann Duffy has graduated to single- name status at an early age. The 23-year-old songstress from Wales goes by simply Duffy, but if she keeps making albums like her Mercury debut, "Rockferry," the world will learn who she is very soon. She's already nabbed a Grammy nomination for best new artist - - and, in this instance, Grammy has it right.
