  • The many resplendent, impactive passages in [Joseph Coulson]'s novel, The Vanishing Moon, make it easy to believe that he is a seasoned poet. Coulson does in fact have three books of poetry under his belt. The power of the book's engaging, epic story would also suggest that Coulson is a veteran novelist, but that is not the case. This is the East Bay writer's first novel. Born in 1957 in Detroit, Coulson earned a Ph.D. in American literature from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In the early to mid-'90s, he taught at Marin Academy and served as chair of the English department. He founded Marin Academy's Literary Festival in 1992. Although Coulson may not seem as fascinating as today's hip, young writing phenoms who appear out of nowhere and who we in the media love to make o...

  • The 10th Congressional District has two appealing candidates, one who has a fine record of pro-Israel support and the other who promises to achieve one. Mark Kirk has been dragged down by his reputation for aloofness, about which we have previously commented; his ideas on healthcare remain unimpressive. Dan Seals ran a better rannpaign against Mr. Kirk in 2006 than he did this year (when he unpersuasively equated Kirk with Pres. Bush), and a more enlightening one against Jay Footlik for his party's nomination (Jewish Star, Jan. 25, 2008). Seals told the Chicago Sun-Times in 2006 that Tm no Obama," and he vows independence. We endorse Dan Seals, trusting that he will redeem that commitment. Rep. [Elizabeth Coulson] has again complained about her opponent, Dan Biss, but we suspect that it...

  • Gingerly unwrapping the wax paper from her first pack of baseball cards, Mara Bett's eyes lit up. But it wasn't the seven colorful Topps Kids baseball cards illustrated by Pittsburgh cartoonist David Coulson that sparked the reaction from Bett, 4, of Ben Avon. It was the 12-year-old stick of pink bubble gum that came with them.

  • Using the case of the new stadiums for the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany, this paper is the first multivariate work that examines the potential income and employment effects of new stadiums outside of the USA. This study is also the first work on this topic that conducts tests on the basis of a (serial correlation consistent) Difference-in-Difference model with level and trends. As a robustness check, we use the "ignoring time series information" model in a form that is modified for non-synchronous interventions. We were not able to identify income or employment effects of the construction of new stadiums for the FIFA World Cup 2006, which are significantly different from zero.

  • The exhibition of recent photographic work by Lauren Coulson and Annette Fournet at Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects is one of the most stimulating and provocative shows displayed at the firm's gallery in years. Coulson's digital images, from her "Psychological Portraits Series," continue along lines she began developing as a student, but are no less startling for that connection, while Fournet's principal images in the exhibition take a surprising and risky turn from her previous efforts. Both bodies of work, however divergent in method and intention, draw viewers into their fantastical realms of emotional pressure.

  • LONDON - Prime Minister David Cameron's former communications chief and an ex-royal reporter were arrested Friday in a phone hacking and police corruption scandal that has already toppled a major tabloid and rattled the cozy relationship between British politicians and the powerful Murdoch media empire. The 168-year-old muckraking tabloid News of the World was shut down Thursday after being engulfed by allegations its journalists paid police for information and hacked into the phone messages of celebrities, young murder victims and even the grieving families of dead soldiers. Its last publication day is Sunday.

  • Knowledge libraries hold the promise of widespread access to information available anywhere, anytime, freeing patrons from the geographical and temporal boundaries that currently exist. The classification of materials and subsequent searching of knowledge library content is an overall problem with many complex parts. Relevant classification is important for optimal information retrieval. This is especially important for the virtual communities that exist with extended organizations. Rooted in the virtual community and digital library literature, this paper develops a theory for improving the information classification and retrieval process of knowledge libraries that support virtual communities by applying social bookmarking techniques.
