During the first quarter of the year, 2,961 Connecticut businesses closed their doors, a 17 percent drop from the 3,477 that shut down in the first quarter of 2009, state officials said Friday.

The sudden closing of Bella Notte in East Haven, a state Department of Consumer Protection investigation into two locksmith companies cited for false advertising and other incidents around the state have inspired two bills under consideration by the state legislature.
Raised Bill 5766 would require any person or business that rents or leases a facility for events to escrow deposits in excess of $500. If the facility shuts down, an escrow agent would have to return down payments to any clients left in limbo.

By Register Staff State records show that slightly more businesses opened in Connecticut during the third quarter than did a year ago, but business failures so far this year have set a record pace.
According to the secretary of the state's office, which tracks business openings and closures, 6,624 new businesses incorporated in Connecticut during the third quarter, an increase of about 2 percent over the third quarter of 2008, when 6,468 opened.
