It's graduation season, and this year students are looking at better odds in the job market than their 2010 and 2009 predecessors. A survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers suggests that hiring of college grads will rise 19 percent this year compared with last year. Washington and Lee University holds one of the latest graduation ceremonies in the area, May 26. Greg Franke, a European history major from Glen Arn, Md., and Alex Harper, a mass communications and business administration major from Oakton, are among the seniors turning their tassels.

ACADEMIC Ashley Benton, Jaleel Nelson and Mindy Byrd, all of Suffolk, were Student Award winners at Chowan University's annual Awards Day convocation ceremony. Benton, a senior, received the Psychology Award. The award is presented by psychology faculty to an outstanding psychology major based upon academic promise and interest in the discipline. Nelson, a senior business administration major, received the Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award. Mindy Byrd, a junior business administration major, received the most Outstanding Female Athlete Award. The athletic awards are made possible by the late Mrs. Dorothy H. Brown of Murfreesboro, a Chowan alumna and a devoted friend of the university.
