For those of you who are undecided about whom to vote for in the upcoming presidential election, or for those who think maybe the president does not have much impact on our day-to-day lives, think about this: If Al Gore and/or John Kerry had been elected in 2000 and 2004, respectively, you no longer would have the right to possess firearms.
In the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, just five of the nine justices voted to uphold the original meaning of the Second Amendment; the other dissenting, liberal justices would have overturned those rights. Because George Bush was elected in 2000 and again in 2004, he was able to appoint two of the strict constructionist justices who voted to uphold the amendment's original meaning. Mr. Gore or Mr. Kerry certainly would have appointed liberal...

THE passions that swirled around Bush v. Gore, the Supreme Court case that ended 10 years ago today, dissipated quickly. Remarkably little damage was done by the institutional collisions that resulted when control of the nation's top political office turned on 537 votes out of 5,963,110 cast in Florida. Many controversies concerned whether particular votes were cast properly. Chads are those bits of paper that, when a ballot is properly cast by puncturing spots, are separated from the ballot. In Florida, there were "dimpled" chads that were merely dented, and "hanging" chads not separated from the ballots. Furthermore, there were undervotes (ballots with no vote for president) and overvotes (votes for two presidential candidates) and ill-designed butterfly ballots.
