NEW ORLEANS -- President Bush commemorated Hurricane Katrina's devastating blow Wednesday with a somber moment of silence. Across town, in a symbol of a federal-city divide that persists two years after the killer storm, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin marked the levee- breach moment with bell-ringing.
We're still paying attention. We understand," Bush said in remarks afterward.

NEW ORLEANS -- Vowing that this waterlogged virtual ghost town will rise again, President Bush pledged on Thursday night an unprecedented federal response to Hurricane Katrina that he said should include tax breaks for businesses, help for the displaced poor and revamped evacuation plans for the future.
In a nationally televised address from the historic French Quarter, Bush sought to reassure Americans and especially the victims of Hurricane Katrina, many of whom criticized the initial rescue efforts, that Washington will be bold in the recovery job.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid sent the following letter to President Bush yesterday requesting an immediate 60-day moratorium on the demolition of public housing developments in New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS Six months after Hurricane Katrina, President Bush got a close-up look Wednesday at the mountains of debris, the abandoned homes and the boarded-up businesses that are shocking reminders of the "pain and agony" New Orleans endures still.
In the devastated Lower Ninth Ward, few residents were around to tell Bush how they felt. But two young women held up a sign for his motorcade that said, "Where's my government?" Farther up the road, a man waved a flattened cardboard box on which he had written, "Pres. cut the red tape and help us.

CRAWFORD, Texas -- President Bush will return to the Gulf Coast this week, where hard times and resentment linger two years after Hurricane Katrina's massive strike.
Bush will fly into New Orleans on Tuesday after giving a speech about the Iraq war to the American Legion convention in Reno, Nev. On Wednesday, the anniversary of the storm, he is expected to examine recovery efforts in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - President Bush spent about two hours in New Orleans on Thursday, whisking through the city in his motorcade and meeting with local officials in a neighborhood that suffered little damage from the ruinous flooding that Hurricane Katrina brought.
Still, the president said he witnessed a "pretty dynamic" change for the better since his last visit three months ago.
