  • A New York county's loss could be a big gain for Maine's bus systems. The Maine Department of Transportation is working to broker a deal bringing 11 2008 and 2009 Orion buses from a reduced Westchester County transit system to Maine. The buses, technically owned by the Federal Transit Authority, would simply be transferred from FTA's New York region to Maine.

  • NEW YORK -- Tourists from all over the world love to see New York City from atop open-air double-decker sightseeing buses, but the noisy loudspeakers aboard have driven New Yorkers who live in those landmark neighborhoods to wear ear plugs inside and keep their windows shut tight. The New York City Council passed legislation Thursday that requires sightseeing buses to replace their loudspeaker systems with headphones. A phase-in period will begin in July 2011, and by July 2015, all open-air sightseeing buses operating citywide must use headphones.

  • Two bus lines made popular by their inexpensive District-to-New York City fares were forced Monday to move their pickup and drop- off spots from G Street Northwest to the former Convention Center site. That spot proved to be too disruptive to people who lived on that street, so we worked," said John Lisle, D.C. Department of Transportation spokesman.

  • NEW YORK Hundreds of Manhattan buses will be outfitted with surveillance cameras as part of a security upgrade prompted by bomb attacks on public transit in London and Madrid. New York City Transit officials said the initiative will begin to bring New York into line with other big cities that have put cameras on buses and trains in recent years.

  • In December 2005, subways and buses came to a halt as New York City's 34,000 transit workers struck for the first time in 25 years. What moved them to brave the penalties of New York State's Taylor Law, including fines on the members and the loss of payroll dues check-off for the union? They refused to accept new, inferior pension terms for future generations of transit workers. On any given day, TWU Local 100 has over 200 members on military service, reservists and guards. Most of them are serving stateside, but not all. I want every one of them coming home safe and sound. But more, I don't want them put in harm's way for no good reason. There has never been a good reason for the adventure in Iraq, and saying, Well, we're there now,' is a feeble excuse to keep it going when you have ru...

  • NEW YORK, Aug. 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Over 1,000 MTA NYC Transit Authority buses in New York City's five boroughs have started displaying new interior posters, with space generously provided by Viacom Outdoor, encouraging city residents to donate blood. The message will let riders know that "Somebody needs you," and plead, "Save a life. Donate Blood." Hopefully these messages will encourage New Yorkers to roll up their sleeves and give blood during the summer, which is typically an extremely difficult time to recruit donors, and beyond. The city's blood supply is currently at a three- day level, two days below the five-day supply New York Blood Center (NYBC) and hospitals prefer to have available. Robert Jones, MD, New York Blood Center President and CEO stated, "New York City Transit i...

  • New noise law targets open-air tour buses NEW YORK (AP) -- Tourists from all over the world love to see New York City from atop open-air double-decker sightseeing buses, but the noisy loudspeakers aboard have driven New Yorkers who live in those landmark neighborhoods to wear ear plugs inside and keep their windows shut tight.

  • New York's MTA Forced to Run Bus Advertisement Tying Ground Zero Mosque to 9-11 NEW YORK, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- When the American Freedom Defense Initiative sought to run a bus banner advertisement on New York Metropolitan Transit Authority buses (available here), the MTA decided it was "not appropriate." Our client, Pamela Geller, director of AFDI, asked MTA through the MTA advertising agency, CBS Outdoor, what was the problem with the advertisement as proposed. The answer: the plane shown flying into the Twin Towers improperly suggested a link between the proposed Ground Zero Mosque at the heart of a heated national public debate to the Islamic terrorists who attacked America, and specifically New York. Ms. Geller attempted to revise the ad to satisfy the P.C. police at th...

  • Port Authority of Allegheny County doesn't yet have a game plan to make sure enough bus drivers show up to shuttle Steelers fans to Heinz Field for Sunday's AFC Championship game against the New York Jets. The authority normally uses 25 buses to operate its special Steelers Shuttle, relying on drivers who volunteer for overtime pay on game day. On Saturday, the authority couldn't find volunteers to run half of the shuttle buses to the North Shore for the divisional playoff against the Baltimore Ravens. It also had problems staffing several regularly scheduled bus routes.
