The U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announces the availability of funds in Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 for the Over-the-Road Bus Accessibility (OTRB) Program, initially authorized by Section 3038 of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21). The OTRB program makes funds available to private operators of over-the-road buses to finance the incremental capital and training costs of complying with DOT's over-the-road bus accessibility regulation. The authorizing legislation calls for national solicitation of proposals, with grantees to be selected on a competitive basis. Program funds are available to intercity fixed-route providers and other OTRB providers at up to 90 percent of the project cost. The Surface and Air Transportation ...

[McDonald]'s Family Mealtime Literacy Nights is a series of five 90-mmute weekly sessions, which are provided to families free of charge. The program recently took place at a McDonald's restaurant in South Los Angeles where a group of families from Urban League Head Start were invited to their local McDonald's to learn about subjects including reading, science and math while enjoying dinner together. The courses are taught by a certified trainee from NCFL who provides families with tips and tools to incorporate literacy into everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, driving or riding a bus.

MONTEBELLO - The bus drivers union and city are trying to hammer out an eleventh-hour labor agreement in the midst of an ongoing budget crisis.
Facing a $4 million general fund deficit with no reserves, the city is asking all employees to pay their portion of retirement benefits, which would amount to a roughly 10-percent pay cut. If the parties don't reach an agreement, the city can implement its "best, last and final offer," officials said.

The National School Transportation Association reports that 24 million children ride 450,000 school buses every day. But the traditional smooth ride in the school bus transportation business is experiencing speed bumps that are drastically impacting its operations. The recent increase in gasoline and diesel fuel prices is wreaking havoc on the transportation budgets of school districts and independent bus contractors. Rising fuel prices, coupled with new emissions standards scheduled to take effect, present a challenge for fleet managers. For bus operators, the recently introduced propane-powered Blue Bird-built school bus presents an opportunity to more efficiently operate a fleet, obtain valuable tax credits, and become more environmentally friendly. Three targeted tax credits make pr...

THE subsidy cuts have kicked in, raising fuel and sugar prices a notch. While the effects on the rakyat so far have been bearable, how will the situation be as more cuts are implemented?
IT FINALLY HAPPENED. AFTER ANXIOUSLY waiting for the government's decision on measures to rationalise subsidies, consumers woke up on July 16 to higher fuel and sugar prices. The RON 95 grade of petrol went up by five sen per litre and so did diesel, while RON 97 was fully floated to reflect market prices. Sugar - a major consumer item - was raised by 25 sen a kilogramme.

Larry Beahan of Buffalo and Mike White of Steuben County live 130 miles away from each other, and their views on fracking seem at least that far apart.
Yet, strangely, the Buffalo environmentalist and the Southern Tier property owner are equally pessimistic about what once was seen as a likely natural gas boom in the Southern Tier to match one that has transformed northern Pennsylvania.
