If a man's life can turn on saying "yes" or "no," Burt Ross may be the perfect example. A generation ago and a moral universe away, Burt Ross found himself in a Paramus diner -- in a panic. Ross was the brash, 31-year-old Fort Lee mayor but at that moment, he was a secret government informant, helping the FBI document a grubby, old-fashioned New Jersey bribe.
BURT ROSS of Englewood lost $5 million to Bernie Madoffs investment scam. But Ross got religion. Rosss investment scars have been widely chronicled. Articulate and unashamed to be open, Ross has emerged as one of the most outspoken of Madoffs estimated 2,000 victims.

BURT ROSS has seen his share of evil, first as a young mayor in Fort Lee, when he achieved national fame by turning down a mobster's bribe. He said he's more concerned about victims of the scheme who are elderly or in ill health, and are now wiped out financially. His connection to [Bernard L. Madoff] was first reported in The Wall Street Journal. - Martin C Daks and Beth Fitzgerald The CPA firm Marcum & Kliegman LLP, which has offices in Roseland and elsewhere, announced it formed a task force to advise investors "who may have been defrauded" by Bernard L. Burt Ross, a former Democratic Fort Lee mayor who aided federal agents in a 1970s mob sting, has endorsed Bergen County Clerk Kathleen Donovan in her bid for county executive this November. Ross said he is endorsing Donovan, who is a Republican, for her honesty and because of his frustration with what he described as government corruption and "the indictments and convictions of key Democrats.
RIDGEFIELD A national real estate development company is moving to buy 44 acres of underused industrial land along Overpeck Creek in a bid to carry out the borough's plan for a waterfront development worth hundreds of millions of dollars. New York City-based Tarragon Corp. has agreed to buy the 12-acre site of the former J. C. Penney distribution plant for an undisclosed price, said Burt Ross, managing owner of the land. Tarragon is negotiating with owners of the two other properties that make up the boot-shaped parcel along the creek south of Route 46, Ross said.
