SYLMAR - A geophysicist believes he has solved a mystery that has confounded generations of Valley historians for years: how many people are buried at the historic Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, the region's second-oldest burial ground.
Brian Damiata has identified at least 210 graves at the cemetery, where for decades, unconfirmed reports and rumors listed the number of burials as up to 750. The cemetery was the burial site for many of the Valley's early settlers in the late 19th and early 20th century, but many of the graves are now unmarked after years of vandalism and theft.
