SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- This Northern California ocean town, where shops have names like Love Me Two Times, Coffeetopia, Bunny's Shoes and the Tat Shack, is the last place you'd expect to find Jonathan Franzen.
Wetsuit-wearing surfers, yes. And partying college students and weekenders down from San Francisco, about 90 minutes north. But the cerebral, non-sunburned, glasses-wearing 51-year-old recently hailed on the cover of Time magazine as a "Great American Novelist"? Not so much.

For 18 years it was the moment I have been waiting for, dreaming about and planning for. And it is not the invention of chocolate flavored vegetables, though that would be nice. I am alone, by myself, solo, unattended, unaccompanied and apart from my loved ones for 5.5 hours, five days a week, except for holidays.
We dropped off our beautiful, talented, couldn't-wait-to-get- away-from-home, 18-year-old daughter, at college. Dropped off meaning, unpacked her belongings, left her no car and said "see you at Thanksgiving." We were all ready for the departure, especially her 14-year-old sister, who wants to replace her with a bunny. Though I miss her face, the separation has helped us love each other again. To say she is loving her independence is an understatement.

REDLANDS - For Mentone resident Jan Orbaker, being the president of the Redlands Humane Society is a labor of puppy love. And pony love, kitten love and the occasional dash of bunny love.
About 12 years ago, Orbaker, who also owns and operates a training stable, helped breathe new life in the organization, the oldest humane society operating in California.

I love brightly colored eggs and bunny rabbits as much as the next guy. But if you want a concrete example of rebirth and the potential for new beginnings, just walk an asparagus field in early spring. What a few weeks before had been acres of brown raw dirt is now studded with hundreds of bright green asparagus spears poking through. In a month or so, the harvest finished, it will be a waist- high forest of ferns.
This is one metaphor that never fails to make me hungry. Over the last couple of weeks I've eaten asparagus for dinner at least three times. That may not seem like a lot, but when I say "eaten asparagus for dinner," that's just what I mean: My dinner was asparagus. OK, maybe some bread too. And a glass of wine (though asparagus can be a tough match, Navarro Gewurztraminer is ...
