  • PERU - It is unclear what the future of several Peru buildings will be, and a recent town referendum turning down $10,000 to maintain the former school further muddied the waters. At Monday's selectmen's meeting, Chairman James Pulsifer noted that the future of the school building, Rockemeka Grange, and former town office building are all open to speculation. A committee has been formed to look at the disposition of vacant town buildings, and Pulsifer noted that he would like to see it come to a decision by this fall.

  • Real estate developer Opus East announced this week it is acquiring property at 1015 Half St. in Southeast to build a 10- story office building. Although office buildings are nothing new for Opus East, building one on speculation in Southeast is unusual.

  • I had never been to Besaw's - a popular Portland cafe with a longstanding history and a very loyal following - until last Friday night.   • WASHINGTON - A government rescue of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could be costly for scores of investment, banking and insurance companies that hold billions in preferred shares of the mortgage finance giants as assets. Speculation has been building on Wall Street that a government investment to rescue Fannie and Freddie would come in the form of a cash infusion through the acquisition of preferred shares in the companies.
