PATERSON -- Floodwaters that backed into the Public Safety building inflicted nearly $1 million in damage to the heating and ventilation system and other equipment, city officials confirmed Wednesday. Public Safety Director Glenn Brown said that as the Passaic River crested on Tuesday, displacing 4,000 residents, the water came up through a storm sewer in police headquarters at 111 Broadway. By the time the flooding stopped, it had filled a sub-basement and came up about 2 feet on the basement floor.
City leaders will consider spending $2.6 million on upgrades to the Hyde Park Ice Pavilion as a first step toward the renovation of the deteriorating twin rinks. The money -- including $1 million in energy improvements financed through a New York Power Authority program -- would begin to address safety and equipment problems in the building.
