TOTOWA -- He's helped shape the development of this once-rural community and can remember when the current municipal building was a vacant plot of land. After 33 years in local government, Republican Councilman Hubert "Hughie" Vickerilla, 83 -- one of New Jersey's longest-serving council members -- officially stepped down during a ceremony at the council's Tuesday night meeting.
A prison inmate who authorities say planned to blow up the Reuss Federal Plaza upon his release was convicted after trial this week in federal court in Milwaukee. Steven J. Parr, 41, of Janesville faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. His sentencing date has not yet been set.
Despite a standing-room-only crowd eager to hear about the plan, members of the Municipal Planning Commission voted to table Edgewood Summit's expansion plan for two weeks because of procedural problems. Meanwhile, Habitat for Humanity is ready to start building a 24- home subdivision in North Charleston. Commissioners approved the preliminary plot plans for the project Wednesday.
Al-Qaida ordered bombing, says plotter NEW YORK (AP) -- A New York man said Friday that a plan to attack the city subway system was ordered by al-Qaida leaders two years ago while he was in Pakistan with a friend, a former airport shuttle driver who has admitted to building the homemade explosives in the plot.
Amanda Nolan lives in a yurt. It's a round, cozy, surprisingly spacious building which she built for $14,000 two years ago on a plot of land in the Lincoln County town of Alna. She lives there, off the grid except for the Internet, with her boyfriend and business partner, Joe, her two daughters, a pair of tawny-colored cats named Nori and Chester and an enormous, jet-black Newfoundland named Finn. Outside, a small herd of goats bleats as visitors arrive, slowly making their way down the long driveway that leads to her homestead. I own my home outright at 29. I don't have a mortgage," she said. "I don't think many other people can say that. It's pretty cool being debt-free.
''The Invisible Bridge" opens with a lovely scene. On the eve of his departure for Paris, a young man is being taken to the opera for the first time by his older brother who is of the opinion that "residence in Budapest must include at least one evening of Puccini at the Operahaz." Having moved there from the tiny village where they grew up, the two have been working dull jobs and saving money for their education, one in medicine, the other in architecture; they are full of hope and plans for the future. At intermission, they drink black coffee and argue good- naturedly about the plot of "Tosca"; after the show, they admire the building's grand foyer. Affectionately, they make jokes about which of them might find a girlfriend first and how long it will be before they see each other agai...
Last fall, officials in Duck purchased 10 acres in the village commercial area, and now the town is considering how to use the land, including constructing its municipal building there. The property is located sound-side, surrounding Herron's Restaurant on Duck Road , the main artery through town. Residents resisted plans to put a 32,000-square-foot Food Lion on the property in 1999, concerned that the big-box store would be contrary to the town's village atmosphere.
