Building Materials Corporation of America, a Wayne-based maker of roofing and specialty building products, said Thursday that it wants to buy smaller competitor ElkCorp for $35 a share. When taking into account ElkCorp's long-term debt, the proposal totals nearly $900 million, according to analysts.
Building Materials Corporation of America, a Wayne-based maker of roofing and specialty building products, on Thursday sweetened its bid to $42 a share, or $865 million, for competitor ElkCorp. The new proposal represents the second time BMCA has increased its offer for ElkCorp, a publicly traded roof-shingle maker in Dallas.

Building Materials Corporation of America, a Wayne-based maker of roofing and specialty building products, emerged as the winner Tuesday in a bidding war for smaller competitor ElkCorp. In a statement, Dallas-based ElkCorp said it plans to accept BMCA's bid and terminate a planned sale to private equity firm Carlyle Group. Including ElkCorp's debt, the deal is valued at more than $1 billion.
