To be sure, the Building Industry Association of Clark County represents just a fraction of an estimated 10,000 local residents employed in some aspect of construction, be it commercial or residential. But the association's growth and a more focused political agenda over the past three years corresponds to the economic clout that the home builders have come to wield.
Led by Executive Director David Roewe, building industry association membership has shot up 75 percent, from 527 in the fall of 2001 to 920. The staff has grown from four to seven. The annual operating budget has doubled, from $750,000 to $1.5 million. Through its political action committee, the builders are exercising new muscle, influencing political campaigns and countywide land-use decision-making.
