  • This article describes a collaborative approach initiated by the Monfort Institute at the University of Northern Colorado to engage high-level practitioners of performance excellence and academic researchers to: a) identify the external and internal dilemmas facing practitioners in high-performing organizations; b) develop a purposeful research agenda that addresses both the needs and interests of practitioners and researchers; and c) develop a concept of operations to address the research agenda. High-performing organizations face many external pressures from customers, investors, suppliers and partners, and the public. In addition, they face internal challenges including leadership and work force turnover, cultural challenges, and limited understanding of the continuous refinement and...

  • When looking at colleges, some students face a gap between their financial means and the university that is right for them. Fortunately, endowed scholarships in the Information Systems (ISY) department at Hankamer build bridges between the limitations of finance and of technology. Recent ISY graduates and scholarship recipients such as Kevin Riess and Derek Ripley gained skills ranging from protecting networks to developing programs suited to a business' needs. Without information systems, business would operate much more inefficiently, said Ripley. Reiss enjoys the opportunity to combine business with his interest in computers and looks forward to learning and moving up in the information systems world.

  • Tanya Bottomley's goal in attending the Building Bridges seminar Monday morning was to get something to take back to make her business team at Dubuque Bank & Trust stronger. She got what she wanted, after some talking, bending, cheering and blindness.

  • There is something magical that happens when people gather to watch food being prepared. The cook stirs, chops, sears. Plates are filled and refilled. The diners smile; the cook smiles. Differences and diversities are forgotten with the common bond of sustenance.

  • For anyone who thinks librarians don't have a sense of humor, think again. SLA president Stephen Abram and SLA CEO Janice Lachance led the cast of characters from The Wizard of Oz along a prefab yellow brick road for the start of SLA 2008 in the Emerald City (aka Seattle). This year's theme of Breaking Rules, Building Bridges showcased an industry reflecting plenty of innovation and ongoing collaboration. In keeping with the theme of Breaking Rules, Building Bridges, here are 10 things attendants learned at SLA 2008. These include: 1. Look for data in all the right places. 2. Ask questions first, then tailor your talk to your audience. 3. Discover the importance of conversation. 4. Build bridges to the future by preserving data. 5. Figure out how to design a better product. 6. Second Li...

  • Bridges Agency Inc, founded in 1894, is still one of the oldest businesses in rural Norton, KS and still providing protection to the regions second- and third-generation farmers. But in the 10 years since Trent Richmond and partner Dave Lamb took over, the agency, now Bridges Group Insurance, has grown from 3 employees and written premiums of $1.5 million, to a business with written premiums of $12 million. Knowing the needs of its customers is what sets Bridges apart from the competition. A big part of providing that expertise is through hiring experts. Probably the biggest change over the years is technology. Bridges uses AMS's Instar agency automation system, and scans, downloads and uploads data. Richmond also knows how important it is to find, hire and retain good employees. The ag...

  • Because of my interest in Islam and Christian-Muslim relations, David encouraged me to come to Hartford Seminary to take some courses and engage in some research for my dissertation. Marsha Snulligan Haney's contribution uses the life and work of W.D. Mohammed to underscore the importance and relevance of interfaith dialogue in the American context and to elaborate on the faith and commitment within African-American Islam.\n The Nigerian context presents a compelling case study for understanding the social, political, and economic factors in Christian-Muslim relations. [...] the tendency to strip Christian-Muslim engagements from their contextual situations has led to facile generalizations and hasty conclusions.

  • Other metropolitan airports have collaborated to create as many as 143 profitable partnerships with surrounding communities," [Robert Ficano] said. "Our community alliances will not prove unique in that regard. In fact, shared emphasis on our state's inherent transportation infrastructure and advanced logistics from the Bishop International Airport and the Blue Water Bridge to Detroit's Metropolitan and Willow Run Airports and Intermodal Rails will do nothing but accelerate development interests, according to Ficano. We now live in a borderless economy dictated by constantly shifting business needs and ever-more aggressive competitors. Our future survival demands that we discontinue our devotion to outdated turf wars within our state's boundaries. We need to eliminate the perception t...

Then she met Ron Reigelsperger from Building Bridges, an organization that helps at-risk youth, and her life changed. He became the father, brother and friend I never had," Michael said. "He helped change my life.

  • I want to say I'm getting old, but that would be like saying I'm getting bald. The truth is, regarding both of these states, the "getting" phase has become the "gotten" phase. I mean, I've not yet begun to fossilize, but the body ain't quite what it used to be and, frankly, what it used to be wasn't exactly marathon ready. Nonetheless, I used to have the capacity to drive endlessly and shake it off. Recovery time-was measured in hours - or, at most, in a good night's sleep. Alas, those days are over. The man replied, "No, as a matter of fact, we had no idea there was a marathon this weekend. We just came up to explore the town. We're going to be moving up to Vermont for about a year. Hey, maybe you can help with some info - what would you say is the drive time from Burlington to, say, M...
