In less than four years since it was founded as a small Milan, Italy-based cross-media company with big ideas, Atlantyca Entertainment has quickly emerged as a strong global player in kids' animation and brand licensing, and was recently recognized as the Italian Studio of the Year at the annual Cartoons on the Bay, the international television and multimedia animation festival, promoted by RAI and organized by Rai Trade. In 1834, when Samuel Stewart built his home in Randolph's Grove, it was an architectural rarity - a two-story brick structure in a pioneer world of wood. And for all or most of its 135 odd years, before it was razed in the late 1960s, the Stewart house was considered the oldest brick building in McLean County. The Stewart family had settled on the northern edge of Randolph's Grove, a 6,000-plus tract of timber north of present-day Heyworth. The brick house was built three years after the family's arrival, and later loomed large in the history of Randolph, the hamlet that would develop 1 miles to the northwest.
Somewhere it is written (probably in stone) that first-time novelists should write about what they know. Although in his nonfiction writing, Michael Idov doesn't come across as the kind of person who gracefully accepts Advice From Others, in the case of his first novel, "Ground Up," he clearly did so, and the result is a most happy one for his readers. Four years ago, Mr. Idov, a writer for New York magazine, wrote an article in Slate about the sinking-ship experience of opening a Viennese coffeehouse in Manhattan, which he and his wife had done, to their great disappointment, earlier that same year. If that short piece hasn't become required reading for anyone with a similar idea, it should.
