Many are happy to see Townsend's departure Alair A. Townsend is heading to the Boy Scouts of America, and not a moment too soon. First of all, her stay in Buffalo was not free of expenses. Townsend did not travel like a true-blue Boy Scout; she flew between New York and Buffalo first class and was compensated for her travel expenses. She was also compensated while in Buffalo for her lodging. Her other fellow carpetbaggers on the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority were compensated to the tune of approximately a million dollars a year for their so-called fiscal expertise.
A recent ruling by the New York State Court of Appeals regarding the city of Buffalo may have a ripple effect on Long Island as the Nassau Interim Finance Authority institutes a wage freeze for county employees. The case, Meegan v. Brown, dealt with the city of Buffalo's own wage freeze placed on employees by its financial watch group, the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority, from 2004 to 2007.
Ask the average Buffalonian to identify Alair A. Townsend and chances are, you'll draw a blank stare. That's hardly unexpected. Most Americans don't know the names of their elected representatives, let alone the identities of the members of a financial control board. Yet, Buffalo owes Townsend a great debt -- perhaps she wouldn't approve of that word -- of thanks for serving eight years on what is formally known as the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority. There must have been something she liked about Buffalo for staying with this job for so long, commuting as necessary from her home in New York City.
