Discussions of the accomplished quarterbacks in Mid-American Conference history typically center on those who put up big numbers through the air: Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich, Bruce Gradkowski and Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Willy and Charlie Batch.
But there's another breed of MAC quarterback who confounds opponents with his legs. Josh Cribbs and Julian Edelman were that way. Chandler Harnish of Northern Illinois has that rep. And so does the quarterback the University at Buffalo will face this afternoon at Rynearson Stadium, Eastern Michigan junior Alex Gillett.

Expect Bruce Campbell to include Dayton on his book-signing tour for Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way, a compilation of humorous fiction to be published in 2005. A few years back, Campbell drew an estimated 800-900 fans to Books & Co. in Kettering when promoting his memoir If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a `B' Movie Actor - a store record that was second only to celebrated chef Emeril Lagasse. `No question about it, because I've got to beat my old record,' Campbell said, regarding a return appearance at Books & Co. As for Emeril? `He's going down,' Campell said.

The Mid-American Conference has been known as a cradle of coaches. Urban Meyer made his mark at Bowling Green before advancing to Utah and Florida. New Notre Dame chief Brian Kelly turned around Central Michigan before doing likewise at Cincinnati. And we all know the impact Turner Gill had at the University at Buffalo, the improvement so pronounced he made the leap straight to Kansas.
The MAC also has a reputation for being the cradle of quarterbacks. Count Byron Leftwich, Chad Pennington and Ben Roethlisberger among the MAC alumni, with Dan LeFevour and Bruce Gradkowski also toiling on NFL rosters.

(Re: "Massage law to keep us safe", Our View, Aug. 7). The recent "massage therapy law" does two things: 1. It establishes a standard of recognition and 2. The standard, now being a law, is now legally enforceable. I agree with "1" but don't like "2".
I also agree with The Gazette and Ari Armstrong that the stated justification for the law as expressed by the owner of the Institute of Therapeutic Massage is absurd: ("...the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, and safety..."). Right. Give me a break. I'm not fond of some bureaucratic authority pontificating as my savior, relieving me of my personal responsibility and accountability. I believe in the principles of "buyer beware," fewer laws, and smaller, less expensive bureaucracies. I do not view the massage therapy law a...

The friendship of novelist Ernest Hemingway and photographer Walker Evans blossomed during the frantic revolutionary days in Cuba in the '30s. Just in time to celebrate Hemingway's 109th birthday, the Key West Art and Historical Society's exhibit of photographs and other memorabilia of the two men returns home to the Custom House.
Among the memorabilia on display at the exhibit is a handwritten note from Evans to Hemingway, accepting a loan of $10 to $15. The reason for this request, according to [Claudia Pennington], was that Evans had been robbed and found himself short of funds. On the back of the envelope from the hotel Ambos Mundos that had contained the note, in Hemingway's writing, is a terse notation: Loaned $25.
