The unconscionable tactic worked. I wrote a column in the Orange County Register trying to minimize the matter, gamely hoping that [Bruce Herschensohn] had proved himself a big tipper. But Bruce was shoved off stride, forced to explain to suddenly inquisitive reporters a brief episode about as far removed from any senatorial issue you can imagine-unless you can imagine Bill Clinton's impeachment proceedings.

In 1992, Bruce Herschensohn, who had just ended a long stint as a commentator on KABC-TV in Los Angeles, won a hotly con- tested Republican primary for the nomination for U.S. senator from California on a platform of unabashed conservatism: cutting taxes, abolishing such large federal government enti- ties as the Departments of Education and Energy, and forming a rival international body to the United Nations consisting of countries with elected governments. Many younger California conservative activists, among them Rep. Tom McClintock, former California State GOP Chairman John McGraw, and noted conservative blogger Jon Fleischman cite the '92 Senate nominee as a political mentor.

Hundreds of people gathered Friday in the opulent East Room of the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks in U.S. history.
Against a backdrop of American flags, speeches were delivered by Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, former staff assistant to President Nixon Bruce Herschensohn and Army Capt. Jason Meszaros.

March 2 had particular significance for me because, without exception, during every California primary for the previous 12 years I had spent several days in the Golden State. My trips were filled with frantic rushes to interview candidates on their final campaign stops, and then an early morning flight after the Tuesday night election parties to dash off stories. From Bruce Herschensohn's dramatic victory in the 1992 U.S.

Swept up in the growing "constitutionalization" of the law of democracy, political parties today are centerpieces of American law and politics. However, even sophisticated courts and legal commentators adhere to a formalistic view of political parties as discrete, legally defined entities. The Article topples this conventional view of political parties. Drawing from recent research in political science, the Article presents a more realistic deconstruction of political parties and how they operate in American democracy. The Article argues that "parties" are merely a colloquial shorthand for bundles of political relationships, constituting fluid, informal arrangements that defy and transcend legal definition. The supralegal character of political parties complicates their legal regulation...

Since the Communist Chinese drove U.S. ally Chiang Kai-Shek and his ruling Kuomintang Party into exile on tiny Taiwan in 1949 (when Chiang and Company rechristened the island "the Republic of China"), Mao Tse-Tung and his heirs have never relented in demanding re-absorption of what it calls "the renegade province" (much as Saddam Hussein dubbed Kuwait "Iraq's 19th province" before forcefully seizing it in 1991). In documenting Taiwan's stride toward democracy and a thriving free-market system (it is now actually one of the largest exporters to Communist China itself), Herschensohn carefully delineates how Hong Kong has gradually had its democratic electoral system and free press all but extinguished since coming under Beijing's control a decade ago.

With one local assemblyman termed out and another announcing he will not run for re-election, Inland Valley voters will see at least two newcomers elected to the state Assembly this year.
Rancho Cucamonga Mayor Don Kurth and Fontana Councilwoman Acquanetta Warren are among several Republican candidates to replace termed-out Assemblyman Bill Emmerson, R-Rancho Cucamonga. Claremont Mayor Corey Calaycay is among those considering a run for the seat that beleaguered Assemblyman Anthony Adams, R-Claremont, is giving up.

With just four major candidates left in this year's run for governor, the race is beginning to shape up as a bonanza for "oppo" (opposition) researchers, the folks who dig up dirt on candidates, information that often winds up in negative campaign commercials.
For this time around, chances are they'll find plenty of dirt. That's because this is no ordinary corps of candidates. Each has a long record in business or government, or both, and most have taken controversial stands or actions that opponents will be sure to use against them.

Just as they have in her two previous reelection campaigns, once again this year Republicans and so-called experts list Barbara Boxer as one of the most vulnerable U.S. Senate Democrats running in next year's mid-term election.
Maybe some of those estimates ought to be revised. A quick look at Boxer's past election performances could easily be interpreted to demonstrate that she's a lot stronger than most analysts realize, and growing stronger despite what some polls show.
