The 'Alawis of Syria are part of the Shi'a stream; this has led to an alliance with Iran, the center of Shi'ite Islam. This alliance aggravated the oppositionist Syrian Muslim Brotherhood (MB), whose members have been in exile since 1982. According to them, the alliance is a stage in a Shi'ite scheme to take over the Sunni countries, including Syria. However, during the past year the MB has changed their strategy, and we are currently witnessing a rapprochement between the Brotherhood and Damascus.

MACHIAS Brothers Dustin Getchell and Brian Getchell combined for 48 points and 25 rebounds while leading the Machias Bulldogs to a 66- 60 basketball win against rival Shead of East Machias Thursday night.
Brian Getchell had 25 points and seven rebounds while Dustin Getchell had a double-double with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Jacob Scoville added 12 points.

Brothers Aaron and Mark Gutierrez have been stopped in the grocery store and hosted a camera crew at their house, thanks to their stint on "American Idol.
Redlands residents Mark, 29, and Aaron, who turns 28 today, sang a duet of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me" in the Los Angeles auditions last fall. They grabbed the attention of host Ryan Seacrest, who called their duet "so good!" and linked the video on his Twitter page Feb. 3. Judge Steven Tyler called the duet "god-like," according to the brothers and a Feb. 5 news report.

In the lobby of Lanford Brothers Co. headquarters is a Caterpillar tractor from 1938, a reminder of the transportation development business in Stanford Lanford Sr.'s days.
His sons, Stan and Jack Lanford, are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their transportation contracting company this year. The brothers -- ages 76 and 80, respectively -- recently were inducted into the Transportation Development Hall of Fame, the nation's highest honor for the transportation design and construction industry.
