BANGOR - In November 2005, a Veazie couple donated a piece of downtown real estate to the Bangor Museum and Center for History. The four-story former Merchants Bank Building - shaped like a big piece of pie with the crust facing Broad Street and West Market Square - was to become the museum's fancy new home.
More than four years later, nearly $3 million has been raised and spent to renovate the space so that the museum might finally be able to move from its cramped quarters on State Street.

What does a pioneer mother look like, anyway?
According to the Daughters of the American Revolution, she is a broad-shouldered, rifle-toting, sun-bonneted, square-jawed woman who manages a bold, wide-legged stride even with a baby in her arms and a little boy pulling at her skirt.

-degree weather did not deter a small but enthusiastic crowd for the free and open to the public kickoff concert for the third annual KahBang Music & Art Festival, held this year from 2-10 p.m. in West Market Square in downtown Bangor. By 6:30 p.m., the temperature had cooled slightly, and interested music fans of all ages began coming out to enjoy the seven bands scheduled to perform.
This years kickoff show was an experiment, and were already coming up with new ideas for next year, said Timothy Lo, KahBangs executive director, who was handling management aspects of the show from the KahBang box office, located at the corner of Broad Street and Merchants Plaza. Im excited to see how packed this square gets for the Gay Blades. Once the sun goes down, people start to come out.

With reference to the U.S. civil rights movement, historian Charles Payne distinguishes between two different activist traditions. In the South there was, he argues, a "community-mobilizing tradition, focused on large-scale, relatively short-term public eventsrc;euro? a "tradition best symbolized by the work of Martin Luther King." At the same time, there was also a "ecommunity organizing tradition," with a "greater emphasis on the long-term development of leadership in ordinary men and women" - epitomized by the likes of SNCC and Ella Baker. Both mass mobilization and long-term leadership development are organizing, and both can be extremely valuable. And, at times, they can overlap. But it's useful to understand that they are distinct processes.
