David Edgar, of 96.1 KISS-FM radio, first met Britney Spears when she was just a 15-year-old girl who came to Pittsburgh with her family to promote her upcoming debut song, "... Baby One More Time. Spears, who had dinner with Edgar at the Bravo! Cucina Italiana on McKnight Road in Ross, was one of many aspiring stars who meet him every year, hoping for radio exposure. Spears seemed a bit shy and intimidated by the limelight, while her parents seemed eager to get their daughter's career rolling after her stint in "The Mickey Mouse Club." It was hard for Edgar to tell whether Spears would be one of the singers who would become famous.

Never in the history of pop music has anyone achieved so much with so little talent as Britney Spears. That's a big claim, isn't it? Five of her six studio albums have climbed to No. 1 (the other peaked at No. 2). Seven of her singles have landed in the Top 10. She's sold 32 million albums in the United States alone. Those are amazing accomplishments for someone who can't sing without the help of gadgetry. (I attended a rehearsal for the 2000 Grammys, and the show's audio engineer declared her live singing "unusable.")

LOS ANGELES -- Britney Spears was taken from her home by ambulance early Thursday and escorted to the hospital by more than a dozen police officers in cars, on motorcycles and in helicopters. The 26-year-old pop star was being taken to "get help," said a Los Angeles police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter. The Los Angeles Times cited unidentified authorities who said Spears was being placed on a "mental evaluation hold. Spears was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where her mother, Lynne, was seen leaving its psychiatric hospital at about 5:30 a.m. When asked by a throng of paparazzi and reporters whether Britney was doing all right, Lynne Spears replied, "Yeah," before leaving in a Range Rover.
